3SGE (Gen3) Major service advice
Hi Guys
I'm very rapidly approaching my 200,000k service on my '94 SW20 Bathurst Edition MR2, running the standard Gen3 3SGE. Now while I do have a fair bit of mechanical aptitude, most of it has been built on Nissans, so I'm pretty new to the Toyota mantra and their way of life.
As far as servicing goes, I'll be tackling all the bigguns: Timing belt, spark plugs, all fluids, fuel filter, replacing water pump etc etc... I'll also be doing valve stem seals (blowing a bit of smoke under hard acceleration) and potentially looking at doing the head gasket as well just to freshen it up.
My questions are as follows:
- I've had a look around and not finding any timing belt kits for the 3sge (inc. idler pulley/tensioner). I know Toyota share a lot of things, is there another one I can look at? 3SFE? 3SGTE? )Or shall I be chasing down all the parts I need individually?
- Is there anything you can recommend I also check while I have the engine out? (Not looking forward to dropping it and lifting the car over it by the way...)
- Car has had aircon fitted - Does anyone know if it's possible to disconnect the compressor from the engine block so I don't need to look at re-gassing?
Looking forward to whatever answers get thrown my way :) Thanks in advance
