Gen 3 crossmember

Alright guys,

Need some help with this.  As some may be aware, my car got defected a little while ago (rear tyres too worn) so this afternoon tried to get rid of the canary.

There were a few little things that needed attending to as well (flogged rear ball joint, tint too dark, etc) that I could easily fix over the weekend.

However, they found a crack, yes that right, a crack in the rear cross member where the control arm bolts on.  Which means I have two options to fix it:
1. get a certified welder to repair and then have it engineered
2. replace crossmember.

Now I already have a Gen 2 turbo crossmember at home (pulled off a gen 2 I parted out) and was wondering,
Will it fit?  Is it the same as a Gen 3 turbo crossmember?

Let me know if you have bolted in a Gen 2 crossmember when running a Gen 3 engine.

You'll also need the rear arms off of the gen 2 car to fit a gen 2 crossmember.  I may have a gen 3 one in the shed, will look, would have to come from QLD though :|

    Thanks James.
Yeah, I don't have the Gen 2 arms (f#$k) so my options are to get mine repaired or find another Gen 3 one?

If so, there's no way there'd be one up here in Darwin...so may have to look at getting yours.  Let me know if you still have one.

Definitely have one, will just have to confirm its condition for you tomorrow, down the back in the garden shed and its dark.

    Cheers,

    James.

I think that might be my old gen2 one in the shed man.  From memory there was an issue with one of the threads, which could be fixed with a long tap.

    Thanks James.
If it's in good condition, particularly where the arms bolt in, let me know how much you want for it...
Might even look at what else you have just to chuck in to make the courier cost worthwhile.

What year gen2 turbo. If it was a rev 2 chassis (92/93) it will be the same as the "gen3" crossember.

    MIDNIT, just to clarify.
The later X-member (bottom one in the pic) came in late '92 along with the 15" wheels etc.
They can easily be interchanged one way or the other and you only need to change what is in the pic, but make sure that the inner track rod ends have no play. You already know the threads for the control arms need to be in good cond. as well.

Thanks guys. I'll take a picture of what I have laying at home and see what you think it is.
Fingers crossed it was the later rev 2. I have no idea what the year the gen 2 was when I parted it out.

Are you 100% sure that you already have  the later crossmember in there?

Dasic - 99% sure.  I did the swap myself and put all the gen 3 stuff from the 94 GTS halfcut in.

There is a very very small chance/unlikely scenario that the halfcut come over from Japan with an early model crossmember, but mine had less than 60,000 kays (allegedly) on it.  Since I've had no dramas with it for the last three years, and she runs very smooth, I'd say the kays were pretty spot on.

Ok, so I've taken pictures of the spare crossmember and the one in my car currently.  Will upload them now

So this is my spare...looks to me like a gen 2 from the pictures Reddtarga put up.  Also, inspected it closely and the control arm holes have already been elongated with the thread taps loose.  So won't be using it.

Yep, I've got one, structurally looks good, cosmetically not so good.  Paint is scratched off the bottom of the mounds on the bottom and started to rush a little.  Could use going over with a wire brush and some paint.  PM me your phone number and I will MMS some pictures.

    Sweet!
Ha - I don't care about the looks of it, I'll sandblast it and paint it.  The thread taps still good?
