WTB: AW11 towbar / hitch

Hi all,

Just after a tow bar for my AW11 to suit a small-medium sized box trailer. Want to transport some furniture or also plants/mulch for the gardens :)
The car has enough grunt to pull a trailer (Gen3 3sgte) so I just need a suitable towbar.

I realise probably no one has one available (except knightrous) but I though I'd ask anyway.

Located in Sydney

Cheers,

There is one on ebay UK .... just ended, but might be enough detail in the pic to get one made.

Also just a word of warning, even though the car might have grunt, the chassis might not be up to pulling larger loads in the box trailer, but for what you're describing, should be fine.

Knightrous has one too I'm pretty sure, so maybe ask him for some pics. Pretty sure his bolts up to the rear engine mount, or at least I've seen some that are similar.

Red, $25aud bargain! that probably would have done the job. Might see if one of the UK AW11 wreckers have any kickin around.

maj, yeah I'm not planning to pull any horse floats or anything. Couldn't see me towing any loads heavier than 750-1000kgs. Knightrous is thinking or modifying his current one so I might see if I can copy that.

I'd like to get hold of a towbar for pulling a small trailer too.  I think my car may have had one in the past as someone has cut the skirt below the bumper in the middle:

If someone makes some up I would be interested.

EDIT:  750-1000kg is a lot to expect from a small car like an AW11.  I'm looking more at towing 400kg max!

    Cheers,
    Brett.

If I'd known about that UK one I would have bought it and got it collected and shipped somehow.  Then we could have copied that.  Damn!!

I'll have some photos and measurements from mine up tonight for you all, plus a few notes on where I want to change the design for mine.

EDIT: I wouldn't be looking to tow more then 250kg with an AW11, purely due to the design and weight distribution. You have bugger all weight over the nose and the rear brakes are piss ant sized. If you have SW20 rear calipers + AW11 front rotors upgrade on the back, I might be safer, but I'd be watching my trailer weight balance then too, you don't want the trailer jacking the front end and making it even lighter! I bought mine pure to tow a trailer to carry 4 race tires, a tool box, esky and a jerry can.

When I say 750-1000kg I was just going off what the OEM Toyota one was rated at.

Here are some pics of the OEM Toyota UK one and also an aftermarket Draw-Tite branded one from the US.

Knightrous are you making a new one from scratch or just modifying yours? If from scratch can you have multiples made?

I might also have the ability to make these. I will have a go at drawing it up in a cad program once knightrous posts the details

If the OEM bar is rated to 1000kg, then it's legal to tow that much.  But I'd not try it myself.  Notice the ball weight (downforce on the towbar) is 50kg.  You want to have about 10% of towing weight on the bar so 500kg is reasonable.

Anyway, a decent copy of either bar will do me just fine.  I have a 4x4 for heavy towing.

Eric, if you could design and/or make them that would be awesome.

I can commit right now to buying one if someone can make them or has them made. Would be nice to have a design which utilises a removable ball. The Curt unit below is from a late 80s Camry or Corolla which apparently is very close to fitting the AW11.

Mrskylighter, I can send you the designs once I get the dimensions from Knightrous, but after some discussion with the friend who I was going to build these with, I don't think I could sell them to anyone else, as if it fails I will be held liable for damages. happy to send out the drawings though, and if you take them to a towbar shop they should be able to make one in no time

    That's fair enough Eric.

I have also found a UK company that still makes AW11 towbars. http://www.watling-towbars.co.uk/uk_cars.html
Part number is PTY61 and cost approx. 140 Pounds plus postage.
I think these might attach similar to how knightrous's one does. Using both tow hooks and the rear engine mount.
I've asked for a diagram or picture, we'll see what they come back with.
