Shame you're selling it. Replacing it with anything of note?

It's "replacement" I posted a pic of last page about halfway down. BRZ special edition. It all came down to the decision of which car did I want to spend money on making it more fun, and the 86/BRZ is very hard to beat in that regard, plus being a new car in a particular spec I ordered makes it feel special to me.

Fair enough. Was thinking you wanted more than 1 beast in the stable.
BRZ is nice.

Good luck with the replacement tranny. I reckon you'll install it, start driving it and just keep it :)

I have a co worker with a new 86 and I took him out in my '87 SC. Afterwards the only thing he could say was 'I knew your car was good but I didn't expect it to be in a completely different league to my 86!'.

I don't doubt I'd wanna keep it, but I know it's rarely going to see much road apart from the occasional weekend trip or cruise that would be used as an excuse to drive it. Fact of the matter is I'd rather see it enjoyed and free up carport space; I have a two space carport currently holding the adub, BRZ and wife's Honda Jazz. Plenty of options for the future but it has to wait until I buy another house with a big enough garage. I'll eventually compliment the BRZ with something more family practical like a wagon or SUV, but very undecided at this point what I want, whether an imported Toyota wagon or skyline crossover, 5th gen Subaru liberty wagon with 3.6L swap and supercharger, or post 2017 euro model price drop, such as a Porsche Macan or G45 AMG. At any rate I have about 4-5 years to decide. Won't be slow but needs to be comfy and relatively wife friendly. mikel1966: they're definitely different cars, and each deserves their own direction when it comes to tuning them. I've picked a pretty good base with the BRZ where I took it to the furthest you can from factory with its handling setup; it's noticeably different to the 86 factory spec even with stiffer springs and additional bracing. I wanted the MR2 because of its pure unadultered driving experience and mid engine layout to learn on, but I'm instead focusing on the 86/BRZ as a modern base that will be around for a while to evolve on. Still waiting on this transmission to arrive :(

I did ask over the page but I think it might have been missed. How much is the new transmission going to cost?

Surgeon: It's a used transmission, so all depends on how much the seller wants for it, and where it's located. In this case I'm importing it from Japan and all up it's looking to be below the $500 mark. The transmission was pretty cheap and arrived by container; it was guaranteed working before it was removed from the car (even had videos to show it), but of course no return policy on used goods. To rebuild a transmission it's in the region of $1900, I'd be keen do to this if I was keeping the car for a long time, but it's harder to swallow now that my plans have changed. I'm still slowly aiming at rebuilding the original engine if the car doesn't sell in a hurry. The car will be cheaper and better value if sold sooner of course, with the new owner inheriting all the rebuild parts for cheap.

Transmission has arrived at the local depot for pickup, will take the hatch over tomorrow to pick it up. Was almost double the price to get it delivered to my door and the depot is only 15mins away from me. Install will be happening this weekend. Spouse has been notified I will need beer and pizza and no house duties will be getting done until next week.

So the weekend came and gone, and I promise I spent all the time I could in the carport swapping the transmission! In reality I didn't get as much time as I had hoped due to all sorts of shenanigans going on, always typical that when you devote a weekend to the car; everything unexpected pops up. However. By the end of the weekend everything had gone smoothly. Dropped the old transmission and swapped the passenger side subframe while I was at it, which also made more room for wheeling the transmission out. Didn't have any issues popping/putting driveshafts back in, so I think I've mastered that technique. Took me about an hour of slowly playing with the crane and jack to get the transmission aligned perfectly before popping the bolts on. Everything completely back together and ready to drive it around 6pm Sunday before discovering despite charging the battery for 3 days it still didn't have enough to kick over the car :( Such an anticlimax. Missus got impatient on Monday and demanded I rip the battery out of her/my car to see if I've fixed it. Followed orders and discovered I'm getting a noise like either the starter is still catching, or I haven't popped the torque converter on properly (though I swear I had since it was deep on the transmission when pulling it back onto the flex plate), or something else unexpected. Thankfully it's not the god awful noise I was getting with my last transmission, but unless it's something simple like I need to reinstall the starter again, I'm afraid I might need to perform yet another transmission drop and double check everything again. I'm totally looking forward to getting over this last niggle and getting the car on the road again, but getting very frustrated having to do all this on my own. Might have to reach out to see if I can find someone local happy to be a second set of eyes as I do it all yet again.

Life always seems to get in the way, but I finally found some time to keep working on the Autodub. Starter was dragging on the flex plate. As much as I insisted the spacers were the right way around and had pics of the original engine dropped showing the spacers, I still had them the wrong way around. Had the engine and transmission dropped as one unit as it made it much easier to figure out. Popped it back in on Tuesday but ran out of time getting it all back together. Lucky it's a long weekend in Canberra this weekend.

Car is running with only a few things to iron out before roadworthy. Such a weight has been lifted from my chest but it's kinda bittersweet because a few years under the carport unprotected has taken its toll on its once almost flawless paintwork. Will try to restore as much as I can. MTC is very likely if funds will allow it and entries are still open by the time I know I can make it; booked flights for a holiday to Japan next year so using the next few months to save up spending monies. At the very least though I'll have this on the road for a few months with a for sale sign on it.
