Cooling options (Engine Bay, Intercooler)
so guys after my intercooler was heat soaking a lot on the dyno (my fan wasnt ON for a start as the engine lid was left open and my fan is still running off the engine lid temp sensor) i was wondering what all you guys have done to improve the cooling efficiency of the intercooler/engine bay fans. I have a berk intercoolr fan but can't run it on full time because it flows nearly twice the amount of the std davies craig fans, which means it also draws a lot more current than the normal fans and hence trips the fan ECU all the time. i have found a way around this by jumpering the wires in the Fan ecu so that the fan runs continuously (haven't tried it yet, so don't know if it actually works) but the problem I'm going to face is having a flat battery soon because of having the fan running constantly if the engines not running (when the cars just on ACC etc) I was wondering if there was a way to run a pressure switch off boost pressure so that the fans only come on once a boost signal is detected and then keep running the fan continuosly until the car is switched OFF. Anyone done such a thing (I'm not very electrically minded so I'm not sure if it will work) i would also like to run a fan in the engine bay but don't want to remove the rain shroud, has anyone done an install like that that doesn't look out of place or stand out like dogs balls and doesnt sound like a vaccum cleaner in full pelt. if anyone has any similar ideas keep me informed. cheers

prob best way is to run a HOBS switch. get mains power from the eng fuse/relay box where the battery cables attatch. run a seperate relay for it that's turned on by the hobs switch, or have a switch inside the car.

I dont think there is much to be gained by using a pressure switch. I had my old set up hooked up to another relay so the ic fan would stay on the whole time (ignition on, not to the acc) without tripping the fan ECU. You can put a thermo in the stock turbo engine lid where the cut out is that looks ok, I used to have this as well before I got the other shroud. I think it was MRGEN3 that did a write up about it a long time ago, maybe 07-08. I have just put a couple of 3 way switch in for my fans and ic water pump. Ignition- so they come on when I start the car OFF- The fans can be quiet annoying while you trying to work on the car with it running, and if the IC leaks I want to be able to stop the pump. Constant- so I can bleed the IC with the car off, and turn the fans on if im worried about it heat soaking between runs at the drags ect

so use a new relay is that what you guys are saying. i also meant to say before have the pressure switch start the fan when it detects boost but leave it runnign after the whole time and turn off when the car is switched OFF hope that makes sense. im trying to have the fan running all the time but avoid having the battery drained when im working on the car, or trying to figure something out and need the car ON but not running. also due to the fact the car isnt being used much when i try to start the car with the fan running it probably will just be too much for the weak battery and wont start

What intercooler are you running?

Berk, with their Fan which flows more air than davies craig(according to their jargon) hence why i think my fan ECU keeps tripping. the Dyno guy having trouble tuning the car cause the intake temps keep getting high and they have to stop. (not that my cars got big numbers but still annoying)

I wonder if you could use the fuel pump relay (or feed from the ecu to the fuel pump relay, if this make sense?) to throw another relay for your fan. The fuel pump only turns on for a few seconds before start up and also when the eng is running. Just chucking an idea out there.

My tuner has a massive flow fan the blows into the side intake so that helps out when I'm on the dyno. My intake temps however STILL peaked at about 69deg... with a phoenix power side mount. Having said that, a side mount will always heatsoak after a few power runs. Its the nature of the beast. I bought a top mount instead as a result.

If you unplug the sensor on the engine lid, the IC fan will run whenever the ignition is on.

yeah mine was at 67 or so lol they stopped at that cause it was heatsoaking a lot and running on std fuel pump and injectors they didnt want to push it. combine the stock sidemount with no fan running (engine lid was open so the temp. sensor wasnt registering anything) and no fan pointing to it either didnt get me far at all. (i only realised all this (fan not working)after the tuning was stopped) the tuner has a big fan but its in the front of the car im going there with a spray bottle next time lol and spraying the fcuk outta the intercooler as its running. 5SGTE - i want somethign that will ideally turn ON the fan after i start driving and seeing boost then keep the fan running till the car is turned OFF.

Go to jaycay and have a look at varoius stuff they .have. Youll have to run a seperate relay at.minimum, add a delay switch of some sort or turbo timer even. Then you could run the fan for whatever set time you decide.
Also have a look at how people control water spray/inj. They often use timers with pressure things etc.

Do you actually have heat soak problems when you're driving normally? or only on the dyno? The air flow on an open road is very different, so you might not have those issues in real driving conditions?

Sorry, what do you mean by "trips the fan ECU all the time"? also: "...but the problem I'm going to face is having a flat battery soon because of having the fan running constantly if the engines not running (when the cars just on ACC etc)" unplugging the sensor will make the IC fan work only when IGN is on, not ACC. Or am my misinterpreting this thing completely? Cheers
