Been there done that, a horrible feeling.
If the rod between the catch and the lock mechanism is still connected even though the lock is loose.
Forget about the hinges and levering anything.

Remove the driver's side light and drill a 1/8 hole as shown in the pics.
Use the wire to snag the mechanism. It will need to go in about 130 mm.

WIDE MR's suggestion could also work too with a longer wire of course.

Good luck.

May be a stupid (stupider?) question, but how to I remove the light - mine was/is screwed into the top and cant get a screwdriver into that as its where the overlap of the boot lid sits?

You probably would not be able to without cracking the top of the light.
Why dont you try doing do the same thing but going in with a longer wire through the indicator as someone suggested previously .  If you can use your camera you should be able to see what you are doing.

Win!

Probably wasn't best way, but I somewhat got annoyed and I got it open, I knocked the boot which is easily fixable (hammer and dolly)

Will post a pic later.

Apparently this is a similar problem that happens with the third generation Honda CRX (CRX Del Sol)

Due to them never being equiped with an interior release (was a safety feature so boot could not be opened when roof was off) the rear release was known to fail.
There method was smashing a tail lights, an release rods that way.
