So many of you will recognise this one from Carmikey's fantastic build thread: https://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/m/tm.aspx?m=141837 (if you don't, I suggest you start there, as Mike did some great things in a really short period)

Now that it's in Victoria I'm gonna get started cleaning, updating, replacing or fabricating what I can over time.

This is an absolutely wonderful car to drive which I am hoping to continue driving for a long time to come.

So today I decided to take the side skirts off.

I was pretty worried as I didn't have a chance to check them when I inspected the car, and Mike had told me he'd never taken them off during the years he owned it.

When I bought the car I left some money aside for any structural rust repairs that may be required once I got it back and checked, but I was honestly pretty worried that I'd get it open and have bits fall straight off.

But actually the right side looked really good!

There is a patch of rust in the usual place:

But considering how much came out from behind the wheel well I'm surprised it's not a lot worse! I gave it quite a bang and the steel it still pretty strong so should be an easy fix.
Look at all that dirt, it felt like it would just keep going.

Now for the left side:
Actually looks pretty fantastic, with the only rust visible along the bottom seam.

Really really excited, and so absolutely happy with the condition of the body.

It's clear that the owner a few back resprayed a lot of the car, but thankfully they seem to have sprayed over what is a VERY tidy chassis.

Happy boy indeed!

I'm glad you started a thread for the Two Tone. I will be following your ownership journey!

I'm glad you started a thread for the Two Tone. I will be following your ownership journey!

I'm sure it'll be as long as yours in 6 months, every time I drive the car there's another thing I notice.

I kind of wish I didn't like it so much so everything that isn't perfect didn't bug me a little haha.

Took a shot at the radio today.

Pro tip, the wiring loom for a sw20 will fit on a late model aw11.

However, if like me you didn't look at a wiring diagram until AFTER you decided nothing will work, you can very easily make one yourself with a 10-pin and a 6-pin molex kit.

These two kits cost me $9 AUS in a brick and mortar shop.

You just clip off one of the inside rails on each molex connector and it will marry with your Toyota ones as if it were made (specifically by me) to do so.

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice I already cocked up this one and put the speakers back to front (fixed it pretty quickly when I finally noticed).

I wanted a head unit that would sound ok, and wouldn't look too flashy, I got this one because it's innocuous

And also because it does this:

Yep it's a 7inch android tablet in a 1 din chassis.

Ok so what do I think?

Well, the GOOD NEWS is:
- It slides out and misses the handbreak and shifter while operating
- It sits VERY securely in the instrument cover
- I wired it correctly
- It has GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth built it

The BAD NEWS is:
- It has to go down the bottom of the double din as:
- It does not work with the factory radio bracket
- It won't move any further out of the radio surrounds without me modifying the instrument cover, which means:
- The display angles downwards when open
- I need a blanking plate or similar as the cup holder I planned to put above it won't work with it (it stops the bloody thing opening at all.

Here's the GPS antenna, all tucked away, looking almost like it was made to sit there:

Started on the Road Worthy requirements this week.

So far removed the windshield (32 year old original, felt heartbreaking)

Found a couple of rust spots (surface only) on the top bar that need treating before I get the new windshield in.

There's quite a bit of dust in there that looks like rust but isn't, I'll get it all cleaned up tonight so I have a clear indication of what needs patching.

Good opportunity to get some dash repairs done while the screen is removed however

You are making good progress. Did you upgrade the speakers?
