THE GORILLA INDUSTRIES REVIEW Key details: Purchased new. 4 years and 35,000km use. Tested with 15" wheels and 17" wheels.
Overview: If you're after a set of coilovers that allows you to tweak its settings like the MIA space station, or like to spend time with your chiropractor from vibration induced back pain, then these are
NOT the coilovers for you. If you are however looking for a slightly more than OEM replacement suspension, for a daily driver or highway cruiser, then the Tein Super Streets are definitely worth looking at.
Price: 7/10 With brand new sets going for roughly $1500 or 2nd had for about $1k delivered to your door*, they represent a small but valuable premium over OEM replacement strut/spring combinations or rebuilds.
Ride quality: 8/10 The ride given by these coilovers is extremely comfortable. On the softest setting, they're essentially the same as a set of OEM struts. But flicking the settings over to the stiffest, and you will feel a noticeable change in the ride quality, however, still nothing bone breaking as even on the stiffest setting, it will negotiate divets, bumps and potholes with poise. Given the fact I had used the car as a daily driver for a large part of the test period, it passed the comfort and ride quality test with flying colours.
Handling: 6/10 Track: Not impressive, yet not disappointing. For what they are, they performed well. Susceptible to body roll due to the soft-ish springs they led the car to a fair bit of understeer as the G forces worked to roll the car one way or the next.
Drag: The rear's softest settings allowed for good grip at launches.
Street: Whilst at a track I feel like something stiffer would have been nice, on the street, I found that the super streets were solid. I felt confident that the car was staying planted on the road, even with bumps/divets/potholes and as a result, I quite liked the way it handled for street driving.
Adjustability: 6/10 The construct is not a monotube design, so there for height is not independently adjustable from stiffness as the only way to change height was to change the pre-load of the spring, but still has more options for adjustment than standard strut/spring combos. The 16 damper settings work well, with a noticable difference between settings 1 and 16.
Verdict: 7/10 Overall the Tein SS repesents an excellent option for those not too fussy about having racing style stiffness/handling and are happy to use these for what they were designed to do. Be driven on the street!
