Removal of windscreen pillar trim [DONE]

Putting a call out for assistance!

Does anyone have an Ikea style diagram showing me how to correctly remove the trim from the windscreen pillars? You know, the kind that a blonde woman can follow!

I have an SW20 Targa and I need to remove tv antenna cables (yes, tv) that the previous owner has placed under the trim. I don't want to damage anything and I am not sure what order I need to remove each of the components.

Also, are there any special tools that I need to do this?

Cheers, M

Maybe another could provide a more helpful response.

If they are to be removed and discarded there may be no need to remove the pillar trim - cut them off (when there is no power to them) as short as possible and try to pull them through to the console area. It's not much over a foot long, should be ok to pull through i'd imagine.

That or try they above tool diagrams. I did not enjoy my dash removal/a pillar trim job.

Thanks Dudeman...........you're a funny man! I may have to resort to cutting the cables..........just can't find where the cables run under the dash......they have been concealed very well.

I'm looking forward to laying on my back in the floor wells with a torch between my teeth!

When it comes to the zappy stuff I prefer to refer to an expert.

It would be most ordinary to be rendered immobile by short circuit if these cables were still powered and stuffed something up.

Spend $X now, save $YZ later.

    Ahh Dudeman lol

Monika, you'll need to remove the passenger side handle first - pop off the little covers top and bottom, and unbolt the handle. I suggest using a flat head screwdriver wrapped in some masking tape to avoid damage/scratches when removing the little covers.
Next, remove your targa panels, then pop the very top of the pillar trim over the part where the roof locks in to, use your screwdriver again if needed.
The trims should then pop out with a little bit of persuasion, they are held in by clips and run all the way down to the door sills, so make sure the doors are wide open. Start carefully removing it from the top, pulling towards the rear/centre of the car.

And it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that before anything else you'll be disconnecting the battery . . .

Silly as it may sound some of the TV systems do use a powered antenna cable, and if this has been wired to Bat+ rather than ACC it could be possible to pinch the wire while removing the trim.

Yes some people do crazy wiring.
Maybe check in the frunk to see if any foreign looking wires are connected to the battery.
Or perhaps you could use a multimeter to see if there is any power to the wires anyway.

The service manual pic may help.

Thank you Señor_2, your written description is written in a way that my blonde locks comprehend.

As for the responses about the battery connection.......this has me nervous! Would I be correct in presuming that if the unit only turns on when I have the key turned to ACC that it is not connected directly to the battery???

No, not an assumption you want to make.  As an example, do you see your car stereo on without the key in?  No (if it's been wired correctly), it has a Bat+ connection to maintain station memory.  The same with this TV setup, it MAY have a memory saver circuit.  Not saying that it does, just that it's safer to disconnect the battery first.
