Removing windscreen from an MR2

Hello everyone,

I recently bought an MR2 which I plan to nurse back to reasonable health as a bit of fun on the side. Unfortunately it has a cracked windshield so I need to replace it. I have found someone who is wrecking a car which I can take the glass from, but I need to ensure that I get the process right. A friend of mine has removed glass from other cars and thinks he can pull it off, but just though I would ask around and see if anyone has any helpful tips or hints, or even if a comprehensive instruction list exists for this kind of thing.

Cheers

they are damn hard to remove without cracking them in the process.

you need to cut through the glue in one section using a knife. feed some piano wire through the cut and pull the wire all the way around the windscreen in a cutting/filing action. just try not to pull up on the wire thats what cracks its. hard to avoid. especially at the bottom.

most winscreen places will sell you a new one fitted for about $300-350. they even remove it. makes life heaps easier.

Unless you're really time-rich/dollar-poor it does make more sense to buy a new screen and get the experts to fit it.  My score so far is 1 successful removal out of 3 attempts, and that was being super careful.

If it's a project car, leave the windscreen till very last, then get Shannons Insurance - you get a free windscreen with that  :-)

Sounds like capitalism is the go here then.

Anyone have any preferred supplies of windscreens?
