Mr2 Drifting ;)

Hey Fellas

As a few of you know, I'm into drifting, done it a couple times and have a track car

Thought a while ago though that I would try to learn a bit in the mr2 by doing a wet skidpan at QR a couple months ago

This is part of one of my runs, the other ones are good too, just this one I started getting a bit more into it (with mixxed results :P ) gets more interesting towards the end though

http://youtu.be/ZgBW7YEiOWo

Overall the car does pretty good. slight under steer when starting off but when power is applied, the back end gets more lively ;) had more than enough steering lock, and I found that taping the brakes just before entries helped the weight transfer. this of course resulted in much higher speed than I first anticipated, but it was a good night.

Have more videos if you with. I am also looking into the possibility of a MR2 drift build after I am finished with my current project ;)

Would love to hear your feedback and your experiences

-Eric

    Wow that looks awesome fun.
We have a skid pan here in WA - unfortunately they dont wet it down.

Closest I got to this was a burnout pit they converted to a very short superkhana that was covered in so much tar that it was like driving on ice.

Didnt have the guts to go flat out due to the side walls consisting of massive mining truck tyres filled with sand/water.

    Post some more videos!

    Sounds good mate.
Do you have a budget or are you just going to take it as it comes?
Do you have a weight in mind?
Engine package? Be a true drifter," stick an SR in it!"
    Is it a trailer pony?
Stand alone ECU? Full rewire if this is the case. Save a bunch of weight.
    Flares and deep dish rims?

A tight chassis is number one so don't bother with a cage which is mounted on the floor pan. Total waste of time. Use the chassis rails (check the cage out in my build thread) and run the cage to the strut towers and front the roll hoop to the chassis rail in front of the rear strut tower.
Seam weld everything. Bead blast the front and rear of the car to make seam welding and cage a hell of a lot easier.

You should be able to adapt the S14 'driftworks' hubs to lower the car and have the right steering ackermann for drifting.

I currently have a 1990 triton as the track project, which is nearly done, just gonna be resprayed and a couple other small things before i can drive it a few more times then sell it

budget for the initial car is anywhere from 1000-2000, if not less as I want to get just a rolling shell
As for aw11 or sw20... I want to get an sw20 as that way I can transfer things between my daily and the track car.

Motor wise, Definetly go for a v6, NA first up, as thats the best way to learn to drift.

B24, Yeah deffinetly wont skimp out on a sw20 drift car, Can make the cage and pretty much anything else up at my work for cost price, so I have no worries about that

Will keep you all updated, and if someone happens to have a damaged sw20, or just a CHEAP one that a really broke uni student could get off you for a couple hundred, lemme know and I will see what I can do :P

Vid looks like a lot of fun.

Better allow 40hrs for the cage.
    40hrs for the seam welding.
Dont forget to gusset the rear trailing arm points.
A Toyota echo steering column is a nice mod with a good weight reduction. Allow 10hrs of mucking around to make it work. Another advantage of the echo is you will have two compression points incase of accident.
Make sure you remove all the glass, every bracket not required, every wire, every damn thing before starting.
That's another 40 hrs of joy there.
By the time you have prepped for the cage you should have a few bucks to buy the cage and install.
Hope to see a build thread and updates soon.

    Good luck!

Well an update, I got rid of my track ute, swapped it out for a 1983 celica coupe. back to toyota at least!

Unfortunately the mr2 drift car build is on the backburners for a while, at least 6 months, if not more (unless someone wants to donate me an mr2 lol)

if theres enough interest, i can post up my celica build?

    sorry to dissapoint haha
