Lap Comparisons

I spend a lot of hours looking at peoples youtube videos of them doing laps at various tracks and try to learn as much as possible from them. Tonight I had a quick flick through Iain's videos and decided it would be interesting to compare his laps against my own. So with a few minutes of Youtube screen recording (thanks QuickTime!) I managed to record a good lap from each of us and splice them into a side by side video.

Watch on Youtube in 1080.

There are a couple of mechanical adjustments I can do to make the car a little more stable, a bit easier to drive and to make it a little faster in general (Like a dyno tune). However I think my lines and braking are costing me a lot of time. Really want to improve those next time I get to Wakefield :)

I find it interesting that your using 2nd gear through turn 2 and turn 5, I always found going back to 2nd caused too much of THIS.

My lines certainly aren't perfect but they are probably a good starting point.

The most important corners at wakefield are T9,T7 and T2 in that order as they all lead to straights you have to try and exit these as fast as possible. You can turn in a lot later at T2 and T9 and it will let you get on the throttle earlier.
You are also losing a little bit of time slowing down for T3, you should take that corner as fast as possible and just stay wherever you end up on the right for T4.

I have done more than 1000 laps at wakefield in the last 12 months, relative to other people I'm a slow learner!

SW20 gearing is a lot different I think, I can do almost 100 in second.

    Interesting comparo.

I just chickened out at turn 2 and suffered from a nice laggy turbo car coming out of that corner to regain momentum. Like you Aaron i have alot to learn and found Wakefield quite challenging, but rewarding when mastered.
If i could get a 10 i would be very happy indeed. You need turbos that don't drop off manifolds for that though.....

In my AW11 with the C56 gearbox, I top out at 110km/h in second and 145km/h in third at 8500RPM. I shift at 7500rpm where the motor drops off it's peak HP. It's probably due to the lack of rear camber, but when ever I took T3 with a fair bit of speed/under throttle, I pretty much did this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rFZYGaq-Y90#t=180s
Blasting into T2 with speed (in hope of going up the hill faster!) generally ended up in this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rFZYGaq-Y90#t=160s

You can turn in later at T2 with pretty much the same speed and you will end up in a better position to hit the go pedal sooner, if you do it right you should be able to get on full throttle as you get to the apex and almost drive in a dead straight line.

T3 you should be able to do flat out or with just a little lift off.

And if you can do 110 in 2nd I would be using it at t2, I imagine there isn't a whole lot of torque down low with a 4age.

Great work with the video knightrous.
I think you can make some time across the top of the hill with higher speed into turn 4 with a lot more speed available down the hill. Brkaing earlier for the fish hook so you carry more exiting the fish hook which is uphill. With the lower powered cars, this could be an advantage.
Here is some footage of a few laps at the Wakefield 300. Its the last laps before changing drivers after fixing the fuel switch. I was very conservative due to intake temps but the lines are pretty much what I use. You may be able to do the same thing as you did with Ian's footage as the times were close to a 13.
