How to tell when a turbo needs a rebuild/replacing

Hey guys
Just wondering now I have a turbo I don't want anything bad to occur to it

So how can I tell if a turbo needs replacing?
Any signs from engine noise idle noise or revving

Or would I have to inspect it and check for shaft play
How can I be sure it has shaft okay also

One more thing
Anyone that has a spare ct20b
Or ct27 lying around I'd love to take it off you :)

    excessive noise, evidence of compressor wheel rubbing on compressor housing, excessive shaft play (stick your hand in there, hard to really 'measure' it with turbo on the car though)  Its axial (in and out) play that you've relaly got to worry about, there will always be some amount of radial play but axial play should be at a minimum.  Specs are in the BGB I am pretty sure.

    Like engines, turbos blow in different ways. What James mentioned is about as good as you can hope for. Dyno operators/tuners can usually tell immediately though (since they look at those kinda things day in/out).

    Axial and radial play
    Compressor and exhaust wheel condition
    Housing condition
    Odd noises
    Does it boost ok
    Smoking from oil seal wear
     
    Ignore the first one unless its really ****ed, the amount of idiots I have seen who grab the compressor wheel, see that it wiggles around a bit before declaring the turbo ****ed is ridiculous. Without the specification and knowledge of the bearing type your guessing at best.
