Blue slip needed for engine swap?

Hey peeps,

I asked this a while ago about needing a blue slip for NA engine swap.  Some of you say no its not needed.
Anyway i got the engine swapped both were NA anyway . Today i went to RTA to give the new engine number to be update on my current car.
they said no that cant be done ..i need a blue slip first. I was thinking wtf.
Do any of you guys/girls in nsw have had the engine swap (NA) have any dramas with RTA or blue slip ?

If i need to get blue slip .. i;d rather wait to November when my rego runs out then get blue slip if its needed .....

what are your thoughts on this ?

Engine changes are classified as an "owner certified modifications", even if it's just a direct engine swap. If you were keeping the same block then this wouldn't be an issue since your engine number doesn't change. Just to bear in mind.

For owner certified modifications, you have to fill out an "Adjustment of records" form and attach it along with a blue slip, so yes you will need to obtain one.
Usually if you get a shop to do the swap for you, you can take the original rego and engine swap receipt to anywhere and they shouldn't give the car a too rigorous inspection since your documentation is in order.
    Full document is here:
    http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au...fications_nov_2007.pdf

Owner certified modifications are still a big grey area because stations that do blue slip still don't quite know the rules themselves of what is owner certifiable, and what requires an engineers certificate. Like for like engine swaps should be straight forward though.

I know of someone who has done an NA for NA swap on an older car, but newer generation engine which is actually a capacity decrease and power is within 15%, all OEM emissions and ECU and ADR approved, struggled to get anyone to blue slip it as an owner certifiable modification.

I'd say ring the RTA. They will probably scratch their head and not know, ask for the engineering dept they should give you the definitive answer.

Same engine type, no difference in HP - can't see why update of records will do.

RTA has a bad habit of giving out bad info, I know of people who have been told they can bring in a car with interstate rego to keep and own in NSW and drive around until that interstate rego runs out. You have to change the rego as soon as the car 'becomes permanently registered in NSW'

But as far as your original question goes, speak the the right department at the RTA, then you will have the answer they want.

    Try http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au...pectors/ais/index.html

    Looks like you need a
Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS) place to update the records of the car.
