Gearbox rebuild in an 1992 toyota mr2

Worn synchros on 2nd and sometimes 3rd are a common problem on these gearboxes. so if you can put up with it then drive around like that, but you will be making it worse and it does get worse over time. although the first thing to do is to use a GL4 rated 75w-90 oil or use ATF fluid and see if the problem goes away. lot of the problems are cause by incorrect type of gearbox oil used.
another temporary but more costlier fix is to use some redline lighweight shockproof oil, it will mask the symptoms for a while.
if you plan to keep the car for a while then rebuild is probably best. price depends on where you go also i guess, since you will have the gearbox off, best to replace the rear main oil seal and the clutch if they need replacing.

I purchased my 1990 MR2 in September & I have the same challenge.  When I rang around & was quoted around $2000 or more to fix it, I decided that I would just have to get used to the double declutch.  The very helpful guys at Autobarn Warners Bay suggested a tube of something in the gearbox & put it in for me .  I'm guessing it was ATF.
Planning on getting something done when I've got the money, but I rarely crunch it now.

You could also try ATF in the box before deciding on a rebuild.  And learn to double declutch/rev match etc, this will eliminate all crunching on down changes.

It took a couple of weeks for me to get used to it.  If I know I'm coming to a complete stop I won't worry about changing down, just coast in.  I usually need to double declutch down to 3rd too.  The main thing I had to change with my driving, was the shoes, lol............ heel, toe doesn't work very well with heels.
But if I had the money to get it fixed I would.  We'll see what my tax return in like in a few months.
