[QLD] FS: Mitsubishi Evolution VIII (back for sale)

Well guys, obviously you've noticed that I've been parting out the MR2, however, my love of mid engined rear wheel drive cars hasn't quite passed by yet and I am tempted to get myself a Lotus Elise/Exige.  This would mean that the Evo has to move along.

I purchased the car just under 3 years ago, around March 2010.

The good:
I have fastidiously maintained this car since I purchased it at around 54000km.  Every 5000km without fail it has oil and filter change.  I've only used Mobil 1, Motul 8100 or Penrite Racing 10W-40 (Group4/5 synthetic) oils and OEM mitsubishi filters.  Gearbox fluid was changed initially when I first bought it and then again at 83000km (Castrol Syntrans 75W-90 used $$$).  Transfer Case and Rear differential fluids (including AYC clutch bath fluid) were all changed just after purchase (58000km) and then at 68000km and 78000km using the OEM Mitsubishi specced oil.  Plugs have also been changed every 10000km (changed to coppers instead of Iridiums and just change them every other service, I don't believe the hype about how long iridiums 'last'.  They may function for that period of time, however, their best is well past).    The car doesn't use a drop of oil, its due for a change now and I checked the fluid just today, its still a nice golden brown & still at the level it was 5000km ago (very slightly over the full mark).  Rear driver side wheel bearing was was just replaced a couple of thousand KM ago.
At 83000km the clutch was starting to get a little long in the tooth and would slip at times in 6th gear.  I replaced it with a carbonetics twin plate unit.  I love these clutches, I had one fitted in my MR2 and driveability is VERY good for a clutch that will accept large amounts of punishment.
As I was undertaking major work on the car and had holidays I also decided to do the 100k service ahead of time.  Parts fitted at this time are as below -
  • OEM Mitsubishi Tensioner
  • OEM Mitsubishi Water Pump
  • OEM Mitsubishi Idler Pulley
  • OEM Mitsubishi Tensioner Pulley
  • OEM Mitsubishi Balance Shaft Tensioner (pulley)
  • Power Enterprise Timing belt
  • Power Enterprise Balance Shaft belt
Mechanically the car is A+.  I have not had a single issue with the car in the 30000km I have had it (minus the obvious of the clutch requiring replacement).  The clutch job was a COMPLETE PITA (MR2 has nothing on this thing) so fitment of a high quality long lasting clutch was a great move.
The car obviously comes with all the normal Evo VIII GSR fruit including -
  • Recaro Seats (VGC)
  • Brembo brakes, front and rear
  • OEM intercooler water sprayer
  • FMIC
The car drives and handles beautifully.  I'm sad to say but it handles much better then my old MR2 used to.  Even if you discount the tractive ability of exiting corners the evo feels far more stable and planted whilst navigating corners at speed.  I guess thats what a number of years of technological advances does.

 The bad:
The cars past is not unblemished.  It has previously been listed as a repairable writeoff and then repaired.  I knew this when enquiring to buy so I got a complete inspection done by Meek Automotive (Evo specialist in NSW) before flying down explicitly stating that the car had been repaired and that I wanted the body given a full going over.  They inspected and road tested the car.  They pulled the boot carpet out and inspected the whole car on a lift.  The only thing they could tell me was that one of the small sheet metal brackets on the rear beaver panel that bolts to the rear bar was was bent and not bolted up.  They also commented that it drove better then 90% of the 'non-damaged' cars they have through there workshop.  With this, I flew down and took possession of the car.

Now, most may know I have quite a particular eye for detail so I can tell you what little indications I had found to it have being previously damaged, these are -
  • Passenger rear quarter guard had been resprayed, evidence was a fine amount of overspray on the fuel flap hinge bracket, I've since cleaned the overspray off the black fuel cap bracket with clay bar.
  • Boot lid had small chip of paint missing on the forward driver side corner.  There was a matching small chip of paint missing on the body of the car right adjacent this.  If you start drawing a picture from this and the above dot point you can pretty much come to the conclusion that there was a rear passenger quarter impact.
  • One of the rear bar brackets unbolted as per Meek inspection.  Potentially a replacement rear bar was fitted
  • Front guards appeared to have been removed at some point, replaced or repaired perhaps?
  • One headlight appears slightly newer then the other
  • Front bumper has some stress cracks on it (where it has flexed causing the paint to crack) that would be the result of a minor front collision of some form

With these points aside I've had the car on my hoist numerous times and also had Meek inspect it before purchase and to date I have not seen any evidence of any sort of structural damage.  No non-oem panel sealant, no kinks, twists or cracks.  The car tracks and drives as straight as an arrow and doesn't have any unusual handling characteristics.   IMHO the write off appears to have been due to panel damage only.  Anyone that knows me knows how fussy I can get with my cars and knows I wouldn't have bought this if I wasn't happy.  I have owned this car now for 3 years and have never regretted my purchase.  If it were not for wanting to get behind the wheel of a Lotus to replace the MR I'd certainly be keeping this car.

Price: Given the overall condition I would probably estimate the value of this car around the $24-25k region if it were had not previously been recognised as a repairable writeoff, however, this fact obviously results in a decrease in price.
MR2Australia price is $20500 inc. RWC and I'll also throw in some FIC 1050CC injectors and a Walbro fuel pump and fitment kit for the EVO.  I had intended on fitting these and running the car on E85 but never got around to it.  This price is not particularly negotiable however by taking the pump and injectors out of the deal I could go $20000.  If you were happy to also do without the Defi Gauges I could drop another $500 making it $19500.

I am happy to display this car on a hoist at my premises for any potential buyers.

I've been completely honest and as such, would like a completely honest buyer - ie, no joyriders.  The car is not fully comprehensively insured so test drive will be via application.  I am more to happy to take you for a bit of a spin through some twisties to demonstrate the car and for you to take it for a blat down the highway and at sensible speed through the corners.  Won't wont be happening is the potential buyer pushing it 10/10ths through the twisties unless you rock up with cash ready to pay for it if you crash it.
