Lifespan of aftermarket car alarms

Hey everyone

Just curious to know whats the lifespan of aftermarket car alarms????
i have brant nemesis 6 points alarm for 12 years . i think its starting to break down on me but not sure.

i thought these things meant to last a long time 20 years or so .??

Me personally I would be considering upgrading an alarm every 10 years or at least looking into what features new ones offer. The biggest thing for me is the remotes, older ones used fixed codes which can easily be copied. Now they use rolling codes which are a lot more secure as these remotes can't be cloned.

Also having the alarm installed properly, pretty much every car I work on that has an after market alarm fitted has the alarm stashed up above the peddles, none of the excess wiring cut off so it's very easy to reach up, pull it down and get access to it.

Another big thing ( for me) is the physical security. When locks are worn they are not as secure, I see a lot where pretty much anything will work in the lock, this makes it a lot easier to gain access to a car and turn the ignition. No one ever wants to spend the money to get the physical security done properly though :)

I've had a Viper in my car for the 13 years of my ownership and an unknown time prior.

A few years ago I noticed some 'drain' on my system I'd never had before.  Not long after I jumped into a rebuild and for reasons Ive  forgotten I had to cut the alarm harness to the siren.  What i noticed was corrosion along the entire length of the cabling.  The siren was mounted in my frunk so odd that I would get wet.  Anyhow this has now been replaced and now the same alarm works perfectly and without any 'drain'.

So maybe components of your system could be failing but if in doubt I'd personally replace the lot.

i had an unknown age alarm/immobiliser/turbo-timer in my car when I bought it and it conveniently died after about 2 years of my ownership when my car was at a crash repairer meaning i couldn't drive it home. I had to get it 'bypassed' just to get it started then ripped out the whole thing when i got it home and got a new Cyclops installed professionally. Been great ever since!
