locating engine number

Hi guys,
I recently went for a pit inspection and was told that I have to locate my engine number.  Just wondering if anyone here can help me out?  I have a sw20 MR2 fitted with a 5sf block.  Another note, I have a receipt from when the engine was built, for stamping the engine number, does this mean it was stamped on the original place or could it be anywhere?

Thanks

Your compadre,

View it from the passenger side (RHD Australia) It's on the engine block just above the gear box housing, pretty much central.

thanks REDMR2RED will have a look once i get a chance, the illustration makes it so clear.  Would you know if engine numbers that have been re-stamped would still be in the same position?

they should be, or at least close to the original anyway, mine was on the factory 3s block so dont know if they are in the same spot but to see mine i had to remove the rear wheel clean the spot so i could see it then grab a torch and a mirror and read it upside down from ontop of the motor lol.... hopefully yours is easier

I didn't think engine numbers could be restamped.  No real need to.  VIN numbers get stamped on import cars once they meet Aussie ADRs, but that is a 17 digit number usually stamped on the top of the strut tower, leaving the original factory VIN on the fire wall.
