Aftermarket Steering Wheel Hub

I hope someone can help with this problem.

Because of my increasing disability and height (194cms before the back surgery) I do have a lot of trouble getting in and out of my AW11, as most who have seen me do it will agree. It's not a pleasant sight because I don't have any power in my left leg, although as I do have a full Disabled Parking Permit my using the MR2 to get around does cause some very strange looks and sometimes rude comments when I stop in a disabled parking spot. I am determined not to let this disability stop me from enjoying these cars and living my life "normally" but the AW11 is getting tighter to get in and out of, so I recently found a nice early automatic SW20 (pictures in the Showroom if you are interested).

My ADub has a cutaway aftermarket steering wheel which allows me easier access, and I was hoping to fit a similar wheel to the SDub. However, I have found that the hub on the SDub is much more complicated than that on the ADub, and the aftermarket hub I was sold as suitable for the SDub doesn't fit at all. This is due mainly to the horn electrical connection piece that sticks up about 3cm from the left of the hub centre, and the spline shaft not being deep enough to seat the new hub properly.

I discussed this with both of our Club's esteemed Technical Directors (Dennis and Scope) at "Motors In Motion" yesterday (see the post in Queensland if you are interested) and the consensus was that the wheel hub on my SDub was probably either the precursor to the later model airbag fitting, or it could have been Toyota used some left-over Celica bits on the early cars until the specific MR2 bits became available. The chassis serial number on my SDub is 000000217 so according to the on-line records it is really a 1989 JDM model. I can't believe I own two 1989 MR2's that are so completely different.

I wanted to find out if anyone had fitted an aftermarket wheel to one of the early SW20 models, and if so what make and part number (if available) of hub was used, and where this was purchased from. Any advice on the subject would be very helpful, including if there is any experience with similar age Celica's. The ADub was a very simple fitting with the horn earth ring visible but this one on the SW20 isn't. The earth ring is hidden under what appears to be a plastic circular clip that can move up and down slightly under spring tension.

Apart from the original wheel being really unattractive any increase in leg swing space brought about by fitting the aftermarket wheel would be gratefully welcomed. Thanks in advance, Walter.

    Hi there,
I have a 1990 Rev one jap import.

There are two diff style steering wheel hubs, one is for vehicles with directional fog lights, the other is without.
I purchased mine from Auto-tek (http://www.autotek.com.au) in Sydney who is the Momo distrubuter.

    Julian,
thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my question. None of my discussions with anyone have considered the steerable foglights issue, but in you mentioning that I know that when I removed the original wheel I was very surprised at the complexity of the hub mechanism. This now makes complete sense, so I have learnt something new about this car. I couldn't figure out why there was such an assembly of pins, connectors, etc; and both Dennis's and Scope's ideas certainly fitted my thinking around the airbag development and possible using up of surplus parts, but steerable foglights didn't cross my mind at all.

The car I have still has the yellow globes in the foglights and there is a switch under the dash on the right hand side with Japanese characters and a foglight symbol, so it seems that you can turn the directional foglights on and off.

Does your car have the directional lights, and if so would you happen to have the model number for the hub you bought. I checked the website you gave me last night and there's no mention of hubs so I was going to give them a call.
Again, greatly appreciate the interest taken in the problem.
    Regards,
    Walter

if you do a search here i have posted the exact part number.
the fitting you need has a slot in it for that piece to go through
its not just for the fog lights, i believe the Power steerign also has somethign to do with it. as when you take the connector off and park the car then restart it the steerign will be very heavy.

    cheers

With your disability, have you considered getting a quick release hub?

You have to take the round piece off the bottom of the boss kit you bought. Then feed the wire that's plugged into the 3cm piece thru your boss kit and onto the horn button, as well as making an earth off the other connection to in between the steering wheel and boss kit.

Hope you understand my way of explaining haha.

Just to explain a bit more, that piece that sits on the bottom of the boss kit is for the horn, and the piece that's getting in the way is also for the horn, so there is no use for the one on the boss kit. Which brand is it?

Walter, this may or may not help you but I just thought I would post it anyway.

On my '90 model Aus del SW20, I have a Momo hub adapter part number C 7715 I got from Autotek in Melbourne.
However my car does not have steering fog lights, and does not have an airbag.
At the time I bought it they told me there were two types available; without airbag and with airbag.

You can't see it in the pic but it has the horn slip ring on the bottom. Perfect fit with no probs with turn indicator or cruise stalk. BTW, the horn assembly came with it.
