This may clarify it a little:

Stat write-offs can still be repaired and redriven again, since they're not "light vehicles".
But, in general, if you have an accident, the insurance companies will determine if your car is a write-off or not. Being part of a car club etc can and may influence their decision in writing the car off.
Sorry, they are 'light vehicles'...
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au...lish_labels/index.html What is a light vehicle?
Light vehicles have a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) up to 4.5 tonnes. This generally includes: Cars, Motorcycles, Light trailers, Caravans, Light buses and Taxis.
The rules are clear as mud but here's a link...
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au...ff_vehicles/index.html A car can be deemed 'stat write off' for bloody nonsense. According to the above link if you were the owner of the vehicle '28 days prior to it being written off' i.e. you haven't bought it damaged and want to re register it after you ask for, receive and jump through several other hoops you may be able to get the car back on the road.
At some stage car club membership played a big part in how decisions were made about stat write off's but didn't see it in that quick read.
