sw20 n/a engine swap (help needed!)

Hi, I've had a sw20 90 model mr2 for the last 8 years. I have always wanted to keep the car as original as possible apart from some handling and performance mods. My engine has expired so I'm looking to possible chuck a gen111 turbo or beams red top in it. Any advice and or places to call to find the cheapest and trust worthy place to buy a conversion from would be greatly appreciated. Geoff

Road and Track would be my first phone call if i needed a replacement engine.
RPM garage is quality but you will pay for it. buying this stuff is always risky.

we are happy to help. you have listed 2 totally different conversions, both of which have different postivies and negatives.
both need substantial re-wiring but the turbo needs mathcing gearbox, alxes, hubs etc as well.
BEAMS MR2 "kits" are unbelievably rare , but we dont have much hassle fitting a grey top Caldina BEAMS engine and you can keep your current gearbox, axles etc
depending  how much work you do yourself, cost might be similar
perhaps call me once you do some research. suggest you try to drive the 2 types of cars and make a choice. Terry

Thanks terry, is there any advantages that a v6 would have over beam or gen 111? Might be hard to test these different options. Might have to count on some good verbal advice I want something that's fun to drive and reliable

the V6 requires a complete turbo driveline & brakes. fantastic to drive once fininshed, but big $ if you are starting with an early NA car. expect to spend anything from $13-$15k ( a few options).

the BEAMS conversion is relatively simple and you will love it. getting a complete or near complete engine package is a bit troublesome, but they do exist. expect to spend around $8k-$9k

A Gen 3 turbo conversion is a nice result and cheaper than either of above IF we can find a good half-cut . getting hard to find ex japan and  most of them now have very high KM's and/or damage, requiring expensive repairs before fitting.  The last one we did was $8k but we transferred EVERYTHING from a factory car (not a half-cut), so we di not have to chase little expensive parts like different throttle cables, dash cluster etc

I can do a a low km Gen 3 NA engine conversion for $5k

usually comes down to your budget. best to phone me.

Great advice from Road and Track.
I've recently got a greytop Beams fitted, "conversion" package which is a step up from bare engine I suppose and a step down from halfcut. Came with engine, engine loom, ecu and all electronics with airbox system (doesn't fit tho but I needed the AFM + housing for custom piping). That and Gen 3 or Beams b pipe or custom (exhaust pipe from extractors to cat) is really all you need, relatively simple as Terry said. The rest is labour/wiring from a good mechanic such as R&T and you'll be happy in no time.
