AW11 High beam Issues

Hey All

The other day I was taking the a-dub ('87 16v) from a mates place back home and went to turn on the lights, everything worked fine until I got up into the hills and tried to turn on the highbeams, nothing happened, the regulars went off, and everything went dark.... not so good

So i thought I would go and change out the high beams, and all would be well, assuming a blown globe.
Then was playing around the other day, as you do with a new car and found that the highbeams DID work, when you used the highbeam flash on the indicator stalk, when the lights were on.

I was wondering, what's going wrong? I had a look over the internet and found that other people with different symptoms (no lights at all, and indicators permanently on) (I've read over bnicho's thread aswell :/) were having earthing issues, but this doesn't display these problems, has anyone experienced this before? any one shed some light  on the issue? The backlight behind the aircon control dash also comes on and off at its own pleasure, but this is probably un-related
Any help would be appreciated!

That sounds exactly like a common problem that occurs with SW20's.

I don't know whether adubs have similar wiring, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Anyway you can read a detailed article about it at:

Might 'shed some light' on the subject lol.

    Thank you!
I shall be sure to check out the wiring, and see if it is similar, and to see if anything has been burnt out, or broken wires.
Lets see how it works and go from there, fingers crossed.

I just re-read your post about the aircond intermittent light.
I assume the aircond still works OK.
On my SW20 that same problem turned out to be the light inside the switch that was faulty, but the switch itself was OK.

Aircon seems to work well, its all the light behind that instrument panel that isn't on, the actual light that comes on when the aircon is on still works, the backlight behind the fan/temperature/recirculate switches does come on with the headlights (when its dark its a bit of a fumble around lol)
But Ill be replacing that for an uncracked one soon so ill have a dig around and see whether something has come loose behind.
