Subwoofer in AW11 ************** SOLVED!!!!!! *****************
Has anyone attempted to put a fully enclosed sub into the front boot, with a port into the drivers side of the cabin ? My creative mind is hard at work !....

I have seen one AW11 with a sub in the frunk. No in cabin porting though. Seemed to work ok, although the car was parked when I heard it. Personally i wouldn't bother but that's me. You can get some fairly smallish slim design subs these days, I'm thinking about putting one under the passenger seat.

precisegrak has a subbie mounted in the frunk, & Ford actually make one designed to fit into the middle of the spare tyre. If buying one to go under the seat beware - I recently bought a "Fusion" brand unit, as it was about the thinnest I could find. The only prob is that it is too 'square' to fit between the strengthening ribs & the seat frame. I ended up getting the original unit cone re-edged.

I have seen twin subs in the front of an AW11. Mind you this was about 7 years ago.
I met this person on his way to or from WA and I think he goes by the name of Feral4mr2.
I do have a photo of this but I seem to have problems uploading photos.
They were brilliantly done. But then the AW11 was terrific. He had built in a sound system behind the drivers seat and many mods including a turbo charger.
He was very clever and was able to put the spare wheel on top of the back of the boot and it looked like it should have been there not just plonked on top.

I have a 12 inch sub (not sure of brand) in a slim box in the front boot of my 87 SC, although it's not ported into the cabin. It only just fits in front of a full size spare (no silly space savers for me), so no front boot space left. The previous owner installed it, it's hooked up to a Sony amp under the passenger seat.
It sounds quite good, no doubt it would sound better if the front boot was lined with sound deaden-er, but the bonnet doesn't vibrate or rattle like many boots do, i think it provides good volume and tone for enjoyable listening. Won't win any sound comps, but i'm very happy with it.
The bigger problem is getting better mid-bass in the 87+ model, as the door trim doesn't really allow for speaker pods with 6.5" splits like the earlier door trims do. I had a mate make some fibreglass pods for my 85 NA, which turned out great. Not sure if the door trims are interchangeable, does anyone have any info on this? I'm considering getting four quality 4 inch speakers in the stock locations to to get some real mid-bass.

After a lot of thinking I was looking in my AW at possible positions for a sub, then it occured to me - the center console at the rear never gets used (in mine anyway), so a-la Ferrari style, I thought I would look at building a sub enclosure to take the space of the console.
First problem - obviously there is not a lot of room and no way of fitting anything bigger than a few inches in diameter.
After a few hours on the net, I bought 4, 3" subs from the US - that is correct, these are 3" and are subs!!!! - 4 days later they were here.
These things are so sexy! - they are tiny, but pack a punch. I built an enclosure based on the shape and mounting points of the rear console, then took it down to the upholsterer who covered it in the same leather as the car, along with the same stiching. I built a detatchable grill and so on and mounted it -
Believe it or not, it sounds brilliant with good base (not 12" sub standard but plenty for the AW cabin).. with 4 of these, they should handle about 120W RMS
Total cost of bits inc, upholstery was about $500.00

Looks good. The bass elements in my home stereo speakers are only 5", but having multiples gets the coverage. The benefit is that smaller cones are better controlled, so you should have 'cleaner' sound than the equivalent area in a single cone.
