I found that even a good rattle gun was no good for my motor that was on an engine stand.
A good 6 sided inpact type socket was needed so as not to burr the nut.
Because I was worried that the socket would slip off just using a long breaker bar, I used a "T" socket connector with pipe lengths over the ends, and one person on each with the flywheel ring gear chocked.
Boy was I happy when that sucker cracked!!

I have a spare Gen 2 3sgte Celica crank pulley.  Not sure if that would help you.
It is 5 rib whereas the MR2 is 4 rib.

I have a gen2 celica one here already, the inside is for the 4 groove (power steering pump on celica), where as i need the 5 groove for the alternator on mr2,

I had the same problem with the crank pulley on my 1mz. In the end I borrowed a 3/4" rattle gun and had it off in a few seconds. I had been hanging off a breaker bar and hammering away fruitlessly with a 1/2" gun for what seemed like hours.
