Grey import tyres - thoughts?

Just wondering if anyone's considered grey import tyres from the likes of Tempe Tyres and St. George Tyres.
They offer a very good price for Kumho KU31s - up to half price compared to local tyres. They also have brands you can't normally get here like Nitto. Just weighing up my options at the moment.

I'm not really up for paying retail in any case. I can already get a set of Kumho Ecsta LEs from Tire Rack for $300 cheaper than the local KU39 equivalent shipped to my door.

You just need to be careful that they still have the DOT for Australian roads. Otherwise they will be deemed to be defect if you ever get checked on them.

AFAIK there is no Australian compliance code to look for on the tyre. I'd assume I'd be looking for a DOT code, E code or JIS mark?

The thing that concerns me is that there's no way they'd last much longer than 15,000km. I'll dwell on it for a while. At least they come in the size I want (215/40R17 F, 235/40R17 R)

I reckon they'd get close to that with good alignment - they're meant to wear better than Toyo Proxes R1Rs and my mate said he got OK life out of them on an Evo. I guess if you're using it as a daily then might be a waste of tyres, since mines really only driven on weekends.  Put these on and that guy in the Proton (or whatever it is) will be in your mirror lol
