MR2 sw20 3sge project overhaul

Hey guys im new to this forum, my story is that ive own my white MR2 sw20 1990 N/A car for about 8months now. Enjoyed it from the day i got it with only 170000km under the belt. Pretty happy with the driving position and stock specs. However lately after experiencing redlight drags and race days ive notice ive got a lot of work to do under the bonnet to develop  this little machine into a performance car. I was thinking of trading it for a newer model but i Love it so much i would spend the $$ to just build on it.

The thing is that i'm unsure on a few things.
1. Am thinking of an engine swap to a 3stge version however heard there could be other engines out there that would be better off? any help would be great!

2. It naturally doesnt have power steering so was gonna use thi opportunity to learn to put a system in my car as the end of the day its a project where im here to learn more about my car and develop better mech skills

3. What the purpose of offsetting the front and rear tyres? Ive already got advanti lite racing 17 inch rims which actually weighs about 6.8kg per rim.

Any advise would be much appreciated and opinions please!
Cheers

    1.  3sgte,  BEAMS 3sge, or V6 Toyota motors are common swaps.

    2. Personally, I like the way the car feels without power steering, and fitting it would be way down the list of mods to improve my car.

    3. Tyre offset F/R? Do you mean stagger?
Wider tyres on the rear is because of the weight distribution, and is important for good handling balance on an SW20.  NA has about 46/54 front/rear. Turbo has 42/58.

    1. 2GR-FE or a 3SGTE + exhaust and boost, would do well in 'traffic light drags' if thats your thing.

    2. If it has non power steering atm I personally wouldn't go though the expense and grief of trying to fit it.

    3. Are those rims you've got all the same width? trying to make your car staggered by fitting wider tyres on the same sized rims = fail. been there done that.
