Respray cost?
Hello, I'm thinking of buying a 1990 mr2 n/a but the paint is quite bad and is in need of a respray, its the stock blue color (not sure the exact name of the colour). Just after a ball park figure of how much it would cost to get it resprayed the same colour. thanks

This question is quite difficult to simply give a straight dollar figure... If the paint is bad, imperfections (dents, dings etc) wouldn't be too visible, but they will show up once a fresh coat of paint is applied. A respray could see looking at around $2000 to the upper end of $5000, for a simply mask off and respray same colour. Much more so if any damage is to be rectified before hand.

Ah okay thanks, Theres no dents or anything like that, there is a small bit of rust about 5cm long on the roof right on the edge near where the targa sits, but that can be cut out and fixed up. there was also a small section about 3cm long on the back bumper where the paint as flaked off.

A decent job can easily cost thousands, and a lot of workshops are not too keen on taking on resprays (my experience a few years back), and if you are fussy, you might not be fully satisfied. With MR2s being so (relatively) cheap these days, you might be better off finding one that has a decent body/paint, might work out a lot cheaper in the end? Cheers

Rust in the roof of old SW20s is common. I didn't know mine had much rust till much later after I bought it. There were three spots in the roof that had to be cut out and a metal plate needed to be welded in. I had one quote which was about $1500-1700 JUST to fix the roof rust and respray the roof. I ended up getting away with it lightly with a cash job at the local panel beater for $700, which was satisfactory. Here's my thread to show what was done: http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=53250 My advice is to walk away from anything that shows even the slightest hint of rust, because under all the paint its usually much much worse. Also another little nasty rust surprise... http://www.mr2australia.com/MR2play/tm.aspx?m=67146

No worries The first two on ebay seem good but I couldn't tell you about any rust from pics. If that first blue one is rust free, I'd probably go for that one.

timjon94 yeah i cant notice any rust on the first one, being an import is there anything to watch out for? Well there's always a few things...make sure its been complied to Australian Design Rules (ADRs) properly which includes seat belts that lock when you pull on them quickly, intrusion bars in the doors, the front parkers should be white (not JDM orange) etc. I'd also say imports might also have more rust than Aussie ones going by how much mine had, if its been sitting around in coastal area.

A paint job on an MR2 will/should cost you min of 3-4k for a job most people would be happy with. People think cause they're a small car they are easy BUT They have so many little bits and pieces to take off and prep and then 2 runs in the booth to get it painted. Not to mention prep time.
