Shift Boot Replacement

Hi i bought mr2 a while ago without the shift boot attached. i have tried to a new leather boot back onto the middle console but fr some reason it will not clip back into place. is there any special techniques to re-installing it??

    Basically, the leather should only be glued onto the outer edge underside of the plastic attachment. Pretty sure it only clips in one way. When I did mine I used tarzan grip and black binder clips to hold it in place overnight.
