Most Awkward Breakdowns?
I have had countless breakdowns over the years
The most recent have been
- Shifter Pin Falling out 10 mins from home
- Alternator Failing at the Train Station Car Park
- Clutch line blew 6kms away from my last Uni Exam (I ended up running the whole way and leaving the car)
- Starter Motor on the test drive that I took my dad on, this was the test drive that I was trying to convince my dad that this will be the most reliable car i've had (this is after 13 cars in 5 years)
Care to share?

My best has to be a snapped throttle cable in the m5 city bound tunnel People loved me then
Followed by a ceased water pump and in turn snapped timing belt at 3 in the morning on the way home from work :)

In 24 years of driving I've only been stranded by a car once, and I was being followed by friends so grabbed a ride with them. It was caused by a single component (a capacitor!) failure in a home built CDI. You young blokes will laugh but it's that breakdown that finally made me decide to get a mobile phone! My Camry stopped in the driveway once (slipped timing belt - long story) shortly after I started it. I just locked it up and took the MR2 instead - WIN

In the MR2:
- Battery connection loose meaning it wouldn't crank - Ran outta fuel lol - Brand new oil pump failure after engine rebuild - Condensation in ECU causing it to short and reset (due to a water leak in boot evaporating)
In the an old beater I used to have:
- clogged carby in the middle of the harbour bridge in peak hour

when i had my mini's they were numerous and i've blocked out the memories.
with the mr2's the coolant hose to the turbo blew on the freeway, no damage and if i had a spare bit of hose i could've fixed it, but had to get towed.

Spinning a little end on the side of the F3 and having to call my brother at 2:30am asking for a tow was a personal highlight for me lol.

not sure what happened but the car just died at the lights about 1km from home. Had to push the car from the middle lane around the corner (a nice lady let me push it in front of her haha). Still have no idea what happened. It appeared that the fuel pump stopped working as the car would crank, but not start. Check all relays and fuses. Checked spark and it was fine, but i dont remember if i could hear the fuel pump or not when the ign switched to ON. Anyways, hasnt happened since...knock on wood lol

Went to start the car to drive home after the bus ride from work, car wouldn't crank and pretty much lost all power (corroded battery terminals). GF's parents and her sister had all gone to the US that day so was only her and I in the house. Her car was in the shop getting fixed so she picked up her mums keys and drove her car down to where I was so give me a jump. She pulls up in front of me, my car starts so I wave her back home. Get to her place and turns out she grabbed the spare set of keys without the house key on it...I LOLed and she cried. Numerous calls to mobile locksmiths...2hrs and $130 later we're in the house and it took the locksmith a good...hmm....20seconds to get us in?

I didnt really know what had happened with no engine light on and kept driving....till it seized. luckily this was waaay before i owned an MR2

Not my MR2 - but on the Honda. Timing belt slipped teeth, was back on the tow truck - when the tow truck wheel snapped off plowing into the side of a Magna. Another 3 tow truck came for that truck, one for my car, and the Magna. All in peak hour traffic on one of the busiest roads in WA at that time of day.

Like RdS above I haven't had anything major troubles with my MR2 in the past couple of years (touch wood), but an awkward one for me was when I accelerated from the lights on a wet day in my old awd Liberty RS Turbo; all of a sudden lost a lot of drive and heard some horrid grinding noise from the front of the car...peak hour on Springvale Rd in the morning on the way to work and had to pull the car over and block the left hand lane.
Took a while for the tow truck to arrive and many angry drivers honked their horns at me but nothing i could do, didn't want to risk driving the car and doing more damage/ At this stage I feared it was diff or gearbox related. Towed to my mechanic nearby and it turns out I'd popped the LF driveshaft out of the CV somehow. Replaced the CV and shafts, but afterwards looking at the old shaft and CV there were no cracks, the CV was functioning perfectly, shaft had all the 'teeth' and he was at a loss to explain how it had happened! He's been servicing RS Turbos for many years and thought he'd seen it all!

Back when my ECU started playing up, i was boosting up a hill coming up to a T intersection... Its got a good viewing angle and its on such an angle that you can take it in 3rd without slowing down much. Just as i finished turning the corner (fairly quickly) my car completely shuts and rolls to a stop in front of 3 school kids waiting for the bus! Had to wait ~10 minutes in front of them (with me intermittently trying to start the car) before the capacitors cooled down enough to allow the car to start again.
