Suspect ABS Issue (Sounds like it's farting?)
Just had my brakes bled and then tonight replaced the rear pads. In the process of bedding them in (heavy braking stops) I was getting a farting sound (like a long, not too loud, wet one) from in front of the steering wheel and vibration through the brake pedal. It only occurred on heavy braking stops (ie: kicking in the ABS), on investigation we found the brake fluid reservoir was slightly overfilled, draining this back to the max line improved it. Now it is only occurring on the "stand on your brake pedal" type stops. Hence my suspicion it is the ABS. Any ideas? Really want this cleared up before the nationals.

did you let air enter the abs when you bled it? rebleed the whole car but have the engine running.

It was just a cracking of the brake nipples to get out what was in the calipers. I'm thinking that sound may be the normal actuation of the ABS....possibly its kicking in in a non lockup situation due to the hard suspension?

Thinking the best thing to do till I get it resolved is just pull the ABS fuse

I have it as well. It happens only at very low speeds, just as I come to a stop. Mechanic mate reckons it could be metal filings on the abs rotor interfering with its readings. Im going to take it to a specialist brake shop and get to the bottom of it - will post the results. (Will be a couple of weeks...)

the early ABS is a hit and miss system, works for some and works when it shouldnt for the others in my case the car came with the sensor unplugged. if i plug it back in the brake pedal is hard as a rock when applying brakes, then it does some cycling/noise etc and then acts like a normal brake (ie - even on hard braking doesnt do the ABS thing) so ive just unplugged it

" Hit and miss system"?? You need to remember, for the majority of SW20's that are still around, that ABS system was designed for soft stock springs, 14" wheels/ 60 profile tyres, and small (lighter) brakes. So, probably not realistic to expect it to work properly with stuff like coil-overs, heavy large diameter wheels/ low profile tyres, and BB K's.

yeah thats the problem, not many sw20 are still running the stock 14s with the profile to match and many have upgraded to the larger brakes. the ABS sensors also could well and truly have been knackered which will result in the abs not working properly either.
