car for the missus

Ok i want a AWD/4WD car for myself so i can put some side steps, and roof racks on it for the surfboard and snowboard, but i dont have space to keep it in my garage. already have 2 cars + motorbike.

So the plan is to buy it for my girlfriend for her birthday in october. The trouble is i cant figure out what to get for her.

i was looking at Jeeps but worried about their american background.

Suzuki Jimny's/Vitara's but they look kinda crap.

Subaru Libertys or a RX or somethign also crossed my mind.

has anyone had any experience with these/ have any other suggestions?

price range is approx 5-15 grand

    Subaru Forester.

I take it she is on her P plates so no GT/XT but although they dont have heaps of power in NA form, it is enough to have fun with.

The later model SG (03-08) has more room on the inside and more legroom, which was one of the SF 97-02 models downfalls.
They also had a 2.5 liter engine instead of a 2.0 but neither are powerhouses.

you can jack them up, lower them, take them to trackdays, engine swap them, replace everything with WRX items or STI items..

    they are a ball.

Probably depends on how big you need it for space requirements for luggage etc, and how hardcore you will go off road.

Something like a Subaru Forester would be good. My dad had the first GT model, has turbo for a bit of oomph, suprisingly capapble off road, smooth and refined in the city, not too big etc. A good all round package. You could get them with a luxury pack that came with a massive sunroof and leather seats (heated in front).

You could also fit a bigger turbo for wrx style performance if required.

    Cheers

Get the Rav4 which has the 2gr ... that way if it gets crashed you can still have a smile on your face! Great car too.

Or as above, pretty hard to go past subies.

    1. She is full licence
    2. id prefer her with a non turbo for reliability + so she doesn't kill herself + insurance
    3. Rav4 switches to 2wd most of the time while driving. (active AWD)
    4. RAV4 2gr csots waY too much even if i shred teh crap out of the deal
    5. Subaru looks interesting but i do want to do some sand duning and stuff. ill have a look at the subarus.
    6. does anyone have anything against jeeps? i want space for surfboards! =D and the naughty stuff :P

subaru foresters have space for surfboards.. and the rear seats fold down flat.
and they also work on sand, and mud, and anything.

the NA Manual foresters have low range.

only the bottom of the range foresters have unpainted plastic, and sanyway. it makes scraping it when bush bashing much less stressful.

the 97-02 Limited models i think are what you want.. or an XS..

The Foresters also have heaps of cubby holes etc in the boot, making them very usable.

They are a completely different drive to something like the Jeep. Its a generalisation but in everyday driving, Jeep is truck like, Forester is car like. But Jeep is more hardcore 4wd than Subaru.

Best way is actually drive the different cars and see what she likes.
