Exhaust
Hey guys, I've just been trying to get my car through ACT inspection. They've pulled me up on my STOCK exhaust being too loud... kind of ridiculous, but just wondering if anyone can suggest any quick fixes and quieten the noise a bit. Apparently its 4 decibals too loud. I've been considering getting a piece of gauge paper with a few holes in it to put between the flange, and then take it out after inspection. Just wondering if anyone had any other ideas. Cheers

If your baffles arent worn out/ missing i'd be taking their decision to their management.
It's a car that made australian standard. I would bet that ferraris wouldn't make the epa standard...

Have you got a stock cat fitted, and what is it's condition?
If it has been gutted, that could explain why the system is too loud with a stock muffler.

do you have the compliance papers for it if it is a turbo import? or do you have the original service book, with the original rego and delivery slip glued into the front of it?
take it to them and ask them to please reconsider.

Its a imported sw20 turbo. I just bought it roughly a month ago. The guy I bought it off said that he didn't have any of the original papers when he bought it. When the car was inspected I did point out to them the big "TOYOTA" sign on the exhaust and and complained to them that it is stock. Basically they told me it doesn't matter and they can't pass it unless its under 90dB. They suggested I go buy a whole new exhaust, which I think is ridiculous. I have the stock cat fitted but not sure of the condition, I'll have to check it out tomorrow.
Do you guys think my idea would work though, if I put a bit of gauge paper between the flange to quieten it just for the inspection then take it out straight after?

also if there is a problem with my cat, does anyone have any idea what kind of price range it would be to get it fixed?

perhaps find someone in ACT with a fujitsubo exhaust that you can borrow for the test. They run just under 90dB

I've heard of this before, an old guy with MG's told me he's been stopped for being too loud, and has shown them that he's running a factory replacement exhaust. He then proceded to ask them if they were insisting that he modified his car?
I've been wanting to give it a crack "So you want me to modify my stock car?"
Incidentally I'm in the ACT and have an emmissions spec quiet exhaust, however you can't have it yet, cause I'm not finished with it.
Oh and Dylmrt ^ has landed my fujitsubo yet, but soon!

You might want to have a read of the ADR rules just to familiarise yourself: http://www.comlaw.gov.au/ComLaw/legislation/LegislativeInstrument1.nsf/0/674F5519FDE2D3E7CA257169000691D6/$file/ADR+28.01+FRLI+Mar+06.pdf
Basic overview: MR2s come under "spark ignition engine" with exhaust outlet under 1500mm, which has a limit of 90db Stationary vehicles: Microphone must be 1050mm from the exhaust, inline with the height of the exhaust but not less than 200mm from the ground (each outlet is treated seperately) Vehicles in motion: Microphone must be 7.5m from the exhaust, 1.5m off the ground at the vehicles centreline.
If you've got an iPhone you can get a basic reading from an app called "Decibel", but for it to count you'll need an actual DB meter

Which laws/rules would apply to an import? I would think that because its in Australia it has to comply with the ADR regardless of whether its an import or domestic
edit: The Third Edition Australian Design Rules (ADRs) are national standards for vehicle safety, anti-theft and emissions. The standards apply to vehicles newly manufactured in Australia or imported as new or second hand vehicles, and supplied to the Australian market. http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/adr_online.aspx

the adr that applies to the car is the adr that was in force when the car was complied. just show them the compliance plate, and explain to them that the vehicle is 96db at 4000rpm stock. and if it is over that then they may have a point.

Just took it to exhaust place today and asked them to replace the flange bolts for me (they were stripped and fixed on there pretty dam tight) so that I could fix it up myself with the original idea putting a metal piece between the flange. The guy said he'd need to do it on tuesday because he didnt have enough time, basically i explained my problem to me and he is gonna fix it all up for me for bit over $200. As for the compliance plate, it doesn't even list any change to the exhaust.
I'm guessing my best bet is to just go with what I've organised so I don't have to keep messing around with it and just get it passed.
