NULON GL4 gearbox oil
Anyone here used this gearbox oil seems to be the right spec for the MR2 box and says its fully synthetic as well remember reading somewhere not to use synthetic in the MR2 box on MR2oc but then again lots of them are running redline GL5 synthetic and saying its the best [?][?][?]
http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Full_Synthetic_75W-85_Smooth_Shift_Manual_Gearbox_and_Transaxle_Oil
going to change the box oil soon if anyone has used it please post findings here.
cheers

yeah im sticking to GL4 which is why im askign if anyones used the above mentioned oil as its a GL4 rated oil but its fully synthetic and i read somewhere on MR2oc not to use synthetic transmission oil thats why im asking
my exhaust has a custom B pipe with a cat in it which ids very close to the gearbox and oil pan so after a hard drive 1 hour or so the gearbox shifting isn't that great so im contemplating synthetic due to higher temp tolerances
cheers

Steve, which oil are you using now?
GL5 oil has double the EP additives of GL4, claimed to be bad for synchros.
But you don't have to use a GL5 oil if you want to use a full synthetic.
There are GL4 full synthetic oils out there of the right viscosity if you care to look for them. You mentioned Redline. Their MT90 75W-90 is a GL4 oil.
The Nulon oil you mentioned is a GL4 but it is 75W-85

Ian have castrol VMX something in it which is a GL4 rated oil i find it hard to get the car into 1st gear at any given time warm or cold plus shifting into 2nd is also hard and notchy never had all this problem when i was running LSD oil in it which was GL5 apart from having difficulty shifting in cold
will a 75-85 be much different to 75-90???? what other synthetics have the same 75-90 i havent found any except for MT90 which apparently isn't as good as lightweight shockproof (which is a GL5)

Steve, for the last 30k kms I have used Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75(GL4) No probs hot or cold. Good smooth shifting (NA S54 box)
The Penrite is definitely ok for my gearbox anyway, but not sure about using it with an LSD but it's only cheap ($28 for 2.5 litres from Bursons) so might be worth a try.

any problem with bearing noise etc i also found this under gear lubricants - they have a proper 75w-90 gl4 oil http://www.royallubricants.com.au/automotive.html
wonder if its any good ive never heard of the before but its not too far from me. i priced up a 5 litre bottle @ $21 pretty cheap
cheers

Not another oil thread![x2x] 75w/90 GL4 GP gear oil..simple really. Many GL4-5/5/6 oils contain Sulphur as an 'Extreme Pressure' additive, and it will build up on your syncro cones and progressively stop them from working effectively.. "If it's not broken..don't fix it" my2c

Yeah, oil threads can tend to get nowhere.
But here is a site that seems to explain fairly clearly why you should not use a GL5 oil, for anyone who doesn't know already.

well its not that simple when a Mechanical LSD is involved. im all for using a GL4 fluid just that all the ones im trying are makign the LSD chatter and suffer from poor shifting when it been warm and driven hard (im assuming due to getting too hot because of my cat converter sitting near the gearbox) which is why i was thinking about synthetic oil
ian thanks for ther link i already have that saved and is a very good article which also states to add friction modifier for LSD if you add that stuff the shifting suffers a bit kind of pointless but im hoping i can find a happy medium
cheers

Not trying to over-simplfy your issue here, just that there's no definitive answer when you introduce a clutch type LSD, particularly if it's tracked or runs high operating temps. Good reason to stay with a viscous type. You can't effectively protect all 3 components: hypoid gearset (EP90), syncro's (SAE 75w/90) and clutch pack (ATF type) without compromise. Plus some super lube trans oils use a molybdenum additive which is exceptionaly good with gearsets but hell on syncro's..and clutches. Honestly, I'd stay with a good brand, straight GL4 rated 75w/90, in a synthetic if you can find one, for the extra temp rating, and put up with a bit of clutch chatter. Maybe try a custom heat shield on the cat if you don't have one. already.

Yep its the Mech LSd thats the problem and which i know theres no proper answer to but thanks for the input as im sure someone later on will find it helpfull while searching for answers
im finding it hard to find a GL4 rated 75w-90 oil even worse in a synthetic type apart from redline MT90 but ive seen bad reports from all searches so didnt bother chasing it up
the closest ive come is this nulon stuff so might give it a go and see what happens
out of curiosity how often does the transmission fluid need to be changed if running a clutch type LSD.

Good question, I'd consider twice yearly, depending on what your doing, to be somewhere around the mark, especially if it runs high temps. I'd even consider a full flow filter (ATF type) off the cooler line if I was tracking it.

ok, have changed to the Nulon oil as per above. cold shifting has improved, lsd isn't chattering or i havent heard it yet. ive only driven less than 100k on it iil give it some more time to work thoroughly in the gearbox and post details later on.
oil was $79 btw
cheers
