MR2s, E Series Gearboxes & Flat Towing

With the prospects of having my race car home in the near future, I'm faced with the harsh reality that I will not have space for my 5m log enclosed car trailer at my rental in Sydney.

So I'm currently looking at a dolly/gypsy trailer.

These little things with brakes fitted are supposed to be rated to 1900kg towing capacity and only weight 240kg. A good option IMO.

Now, the big reason I'm posting this is to see if anyone has some experience or maybe even spark up some discussion about towing an MR2 with the rear wheels spinning while the gearbox is in neutral. From my knowledge of the E-series gearboxes, they all contain an oil pump that is driven from the output shaft of the gearbox.

The pump sends oil to the bearings and gears, ensuring everything stays lubricated but also has a loop on the exterior of the gearbox which can linked to an oil cooler. (Good thinking by Toyota).

My knowledge and thoughts towards towing with this method lends me to believe it will be fine.
- Gearbox has an oil pump, so no oil starvation
- Lack of engine heat transmitting into gearbox should allow it to run cooler then driving.
- Towing will spin wheels and gearbox is normal direction (no weird oiling issues)
- Wheels, CV's and brakes are all rotating in normal direction (no wierd wear)

However, does anyone have an experiences or insight that suggests otherwise?

Couldn't you use a steering lock, hoist the rears onto the dolly and tow it backwards?

Tow truck speed dollies on the rear with the dolly trailer on the front? Might be dangerous I have no idea haha.

This was how I was originally looking at it, but had two issues that came to mind.
    - Low front bar on the AW11 is likely to get damaged and will need to be removed (PITA, but do able)
    - Rotation of tires and brakes in reverse direction for a long periods of time.

I've seen some of photos from the US with MR2's towed in either direction, so still up in the air on the best method.

Looking at this one though, gives me a bit more confidence.

A proper flat tow kit for RV's to tow an MR-S.
Considering the C-series rely on the crown wheel of the diff to spray oil onto some channels that then drain into the bearings and gear sets, I think the E series has nothing to worry about.

Best to check if it’s legal in your state to tow in that manner, if your insurance will cover the towed vehicle in that manner.

    Every state is different.
