New Owner - Penrith - Knuckles the MR2

Hi All, i have purchased my mates MR2 that had been sitting there for sometime now as he is a flight attendant. He owned the car for over 10 years. Im looking to bring the MR2 back to stock looking to pass a blueslip then do some mild race mods. Vehicle has 18" rims, lowered and fat Queen Street stickers on it....I will be removing all 3.
At the moment my main focus is repairing or replacing the targa/door seals so then I can rejuvinate the interior.
Im located Penrith area Sydney. I am looking to go to MR2 meets and getting to know this community as from an outside look it appears to be a proper tight car club.
Been quoted $600 for the seals from Twosrus but im going to try and clean the seals first then adjust the windows. If anyone has a solution or tech tips on what to do with the targa/door seals, any information will be appreciated.

Im also interested in phone repairs, retro gaming mods, mountain bike riding, breakdance/gymnastics, and home mechanics. My main car is an Evolution 7 Lancer. Currently building a shed and will be putting a car hoist in.

Normally I would write a larger mod list although all this car has is:
- Bathurst Motor 3SGE
- 18" Rims
- Very low and choppy springs.

I have removed all windscreen decals in the process of remove QS Racing decals, I have added the wing back on the car.
everything is stock with a few beauty spots.

Nice one! I reckon you'd probably get a nicer ride by replacing those 18's - I can't remember anyone ever having much fun with those on an MR2 except at car shows.

Welcome to the forum. It is a great place to learn.
Yes bin the wheels. It will never drive properly with those under it and they're hideous.
There are solutions with glad wrap and silicone rubber depending on the condition of the targa seals.
Search this forum and also good stuff on UK. forum.
Wander along to the NSW. club meetings and talk to those blokes. Lots of experience there.
    Cheers.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry I didn't see the addition earlier I remember you telling me about joining. It's a great community and one I'm happy to be a part of. It's no OzHonda place and there is so much archived information on the forum you'll master the search function in no time. In terms of the seals check out this thread (https://www.mr2australia....play/tm.aspx?m=130156) which has the part numbers you would need. You can always get a quote for genuine parts from amayama.com

I have a pre turbo intake pipe coming from them this week. It was $20 more to buy brand new genuine from them than any other wrecker in Aus.

Sad that Queen St got their hands on your car. The style was very much a specific time frame and doesn't make sense anymore now that autosalon is kind of dieing. It looks clean so fingers crossed it's not too much work to restore to former glory.

At times I hear many owners want to sell because of the pain they can be and I get the thought to but then I just plant it in 3rd and alls back to normal :p

The link may not work. I will copy the information here just in case.

All the part numbers for the targa seals are listed here:
    http://jp-carparts.com/toyota/partlist.php?maker=toyota&type=211120&cartype=3&fig=6104

Before you jump into buying them though, do a search on the forum for threads on targa leaks. Replacing the rubber won't necessarily solve your problem.  A better (and MUCH cheaper) option to start with first is to fit some 'eccentric targa guides', which pull the targa panels down with greater pressure. You can buy them on eBay:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/T-Bar-roof-Guides-Essentric-Tagra-Leaking-roof-repair-Toyota-MR2-mk2-2-0L-SW20-/272252394841?hash=item3f6381dd59:g:HYkAAOSwH6lXQ3oo

Another thing is to add to that is cleaning your seals really thoroughly, then applying some rubber conditioner, which helps them swell back up a bit and makes them more pliable. I use this stuff on all my rubber seals, and it's brilliant:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Automotive-Seal-Rubber-Care-Conditioner-Cleaner-Stick-/350838757042?hash=item51af9e96b2:g:etUAAOSwOVpXay5C

Finally, if you don't actually take the glass out, you can also smear some waterproof silicone grease around all the seals before you put the glass on and then leave it there. That often helps stop leaks too (but I'd still use the rubber conditioner first anyway).
