New Clutch Screeching After Install!

I spent the afternoon and most of last night putting a new Clutchmasters clutch in the car. After putting everything back together and starting the car up the car made an awful metal on metal grinding noise.

The noise is extremely loud when the clutch pedal is depressed and is present as a ticking noise when the clutch is let out in neutral. The car goes into gear ok and can be driven although I only drove a matter of meters in 1st to check this.

We think it is the throw out bearing causing the issue and we plan to tear it back down again during the week when we get the time. A new throw out bearing from Toyota was installed with the clutch instead of the aftermarket unit supplied with the clutch.

For those of you who have experience working on clutches how likely is it that a faulty TOB was supplied? Is it possible that we installed it incorrectly or do you think it may be something else besides the TOB?

The plan at this point is to take it apart and inspect the TOB and potentially reinstall the old TOB that we know worked and see if that fixes the issue.

Any suggestions on the best course of action to take from this point are greatly appreciated!

Did you compare the height of the throw out bearing supplied vs the stock one you fitted? Sometimes clutch kits are supplied with a specific release bearing when the clutch height isnt near stock due to pressure plate design and/or diaphragm design. If the stock release bearing is much thicker than the supplied one, its probably over disengaging and the pressure plate diaphragm fingers are touching the clutch disc. It isnt a twin plate by any chance is it?

No its a single plate sprung 6 puck, the FX-400 from Clutchmasters. I didn't use the supplied TOB as many people reported them failing shortly after install so I went with the Toyota unit to avoid issues haha!

I didn't compare the height with the old TOB, it was an NSK branded aftermarket TOB that must've come with the Exedy we replaced that was installed by the previous owner.

I did have an issue I thought was clutch related but it turned out to be something which got on to the exhaust from underneath and burnt making smoke!

Thankfully I got this sorted without having to remove everything again. I spoke to someone who had a the same issue after the install and they suggested that the throw out bearing may not have seated correctly and to drive the car for 5 mins and see if the problem went away.

So I took the car out and made a god awful racket driving up though the gears then pulling up and doing it again and sure enough after about three minutes it stopped! It wasn't gradual either on second it was there next shift gone :)

Did you put the clutch disc on backwards?
