Pm me for Ryan's contact details (I don't remember his forum name but his on Brisbane mr2 crew), he has two from memory but unsure of the year. If you get along to club days you will be able to meet him (usually).
Tear down and rebuild is the only way for a new style box, however labour $1,000, parts at $500-$1,000+ it's an expensive exercise.
What you can do without tearing apart the box. Because of the age of the car, it's worth replacing the linkages (replace with bearings) and the square/roller bearing on top of the gearbox (think that's what it's called). Lots of write ups on the forums for trouble shooting/ making a gearbox feel better. The bearings for linkages $10, the other square/roller $10 ($60 postage from twos r us).
If you are a member of the MR2 Club Qld, it's cheap like $50 a year, get along to events held monthly, the members will give your some guidance on the brand and velocity of oil - as that's proven to make a big difference in mr2 gearboxes.
