GT2871R Upgrade - What am I missing?...

Hey guys.

Looking for a heads up. My turbo has needed replacement for sometime, I am sick of trying to find a CT20b or CT26 to suit (in actual good condition) so have decided to purchase a GT2871R brand new and go with that. the engine has only just been rebuilt and barely has 3000kms on it so might as well renew the turbo and everything else around it too.

Obviously the car will need supporting mods so i was hoping to get input on what 'exactly' i am going to need in addition to the turbo (Steve you would come in handy here!....). So far i have figured;

- Exhaust Manifold (with T25 flange to suit) - not sure where to buy but will do more research
- Exhaust dump - might as well just go a complete exhaust system
- Injector Upgrade (figure new snail will need more fuel and might as well give it a gentle tune.)
- APexi FC?... if that won't cover it i guess I'll go haltech or Microtech
- Fuel Pump - Walbro 255lph
- New brand oil and water lines
(If i go a stand alone ECU i guess I can do away with the Maf...)

Is there more I'm not thinking off?. I'm pretty sleep deprived right now so keen to get more views on it as i feel there is something bleedingly obvious I'm missing.

if it seems feasible i'll order this week ready for when i fly home!

An alternative to a new manifold is to use an adaptor bracket like the ones ATS or KO Racing sell so you can keep the log manifold. That will save you a fair bit if money is an issue so something to consider.

Also I would seriously look at the GTX 3067 over the GT2871R, similar or even better spool and more power potential.

Thanks Steve, was only just having this conversation with someone. I'll look into it as I'm pretty well all out of patience and just keen on getting my 2 rolling again so i can use it on days off!. But keen to have the smile factor worked in there somewhere too!! haha.

I'll have to ask my engine guy what he can get the GTX3067 for!.

My recommendation would be to buy a ready made bolt on complete turbo kit from the likes of ATS Racing, KO Racing, Berk Technology, Racerx etc.
Possibly slightly more money but guaranteed fitment without any mucking around.

Stay away from Microtech they are rubbish.

If you want a garrett turbo and are considering a gt2871 I suggest you look at a GT3071 instead. The compressor/turbine ratio is better matched. You won't notice any difference in spool and it will make more power with the less restrictive housing. If that's too laggy a gtx2863 would be pretty nuts for up to ~230rwkw. They spool quickly and make a lot of power for the size, albeit at higher pressure ratios than the gt3071 for same power. The best way to choose a turbo is work out your power goals first then look at compressor maps to see which turbo meets your goals the best, checking that the turbine is efficient for the desired power / pressure ratio, whilst remaining away from the surge line. There is some great tech info and also a 'boost advisor' app on the garrett site that can help.

Buying a kit is definitely the way to do it if you're getting someone else to do the work for you, it seems more expensive at first, but labour is a big factor when building a custom setup. It would most likely end up costing around the same and at least you get it done quickly with a proven/tested setup.
Just my 2c, good luck with it all

Probably need to do some minor plumbing changes on your intercooler piping and possibly change BOV's depending on what intercooler piping setup you have currently. Other obvious things would be boost controller if you don't have one currently but i'm guessing you do as almost everyone has one. What internals do you have forged or stock? If your engine has just been rebuilt and it has stock internals I don't think you really want to be turning up the boost too much, so probably better off saving a ton of cash and just finding a ct20b or even buying one and rebuilding it. Off sock internals you wouldn't really want to be pushing more then 17psi boost constantly. If you got forged internals then a turbo upgrade is worth while.
