Looking at space to add gauges.

Hi guys, I'm looking at putting a few gauges and mounting my boost control a bit better as previous owner did a dodgy job and it looks a bit rough.

I was thinking of removing the radio and the open console under it and putting a plate with my gauges and boost control there.

Has anyone removed the radio and open bay at all? I'm yet to get around to it and just wanted to know if anyone has rough dimensions of it once it's empty and what's the best way to go removing it without breaking stuff?

Cheers

    SW20??
That space is 2 Din units or double DIN
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_7736

It is possible to fit a 'one DIN triple gauge panel' on top and a radio cd player in the space below, but I put the radio on the bottom
    Check eBay.

So I've finally been able to get the photos off my phone to upload here. This is the plate me and my dad made at work a few weeks back, The open spot is where i'll be putting my pyrometer gauge. The toggle switches and the "On/Off" switch are yet to find a use but thought id add them in case I wanted something rather than having to modify the plate. Also excuse the bad carbon wrapping, will fix later on.

Looks good mate if you dont mind forfeiting the stereo.

I'm going for a double din head unit in mine and will lose the centre vents for a triple gauge setup

Like this but gauge facing the other way...

Yeah I might move the stereo to the glove box, usually only use my phone for music for Bluetooth stereo should be fine for that.

    "will lose the centre vents"
If you live in southern Tasmania you may be ok, but anywhere else you could regret it in summer.

    Hi Ondie,

How did you go with your gauges?  I went through the same process early last year.  I found it near on impossible to find a gauge/backing plate setup that let you use a single DIN, without cutting into the plastic.  Nearly impossible...

I found this website in the states: http://www.cubbypods.com/#!product/prd1/3642113091/dinpod-45mm-triple

It's for the Subaru but the 45mm version fits the SW20 single DIN.  For the gauges, I used Prosport.  I suggest just google "Prosport 45mm gauge".  Ebay has a bigger variety than the official website in the UK (not sure if they are knock off's, but they've work'd fine for me).

As you can see, not a complete disaster and no holes cut into the plastic.  The night colour is not too bright.

    Cheers
    Col

Really great thread. I want to be able to have an Electronic Boost Controller and Wideband gauge set up somewhere but I don't want to loose my double DIN GPS or my vents. I was thinking perhaps where the cigarette lighter go's but then there is the issue of not being able to quickly glance at it because its behind the steering wheel. I think pillar guage might be ideal but the boost controller I want is rectangular and wouldn't work. Also pillar gauge is defect central. Maybe I might mount mine in the roof? Thoughts?

Another thought is sacrificing the ash tray. We have that small compartment above the centre console anyway:

I've found these to be the best fit / location for gauges.

Like many others, I found the center console area the best location for visibility.
Also, mountings that angle them slightly towards the driver make the gauges easier to read, by cutting down parallax error.

I set up mine just below the center vents, and above the CD player rather than below, so as to keep them reasonably high.
Although it took a bit of work, I made the pod out of plumbing sockets glued together to take stock 50 mm gauges, but the center surround did need slight modification.
One thing to check when mounting them in this location is reflection from the rear window making them hard to read during daylight.
I found that tilting them upwards slightly eliminated this.

It's a great solution and a perfect place, but is there a solution if you want/have a Double DIN GPS headunit? Also quite curious what those switches do where your ashtray was?

The ashtray switches are for aerial up down, and daytime running lights with leds to indicate whether they are on or off.

I have a fairly large separate GPS mounted on a separate bracket to the left of the gearlever.
Not quite a double din but it does the job, and is possibly easier to programme than a dash mounted one.

    I just found a pic.
