After market Engine Management System

Hi I am looking at having an after market ECU installed in my 98 FI SW20. Can anyone recommend a good cost effective product?
The modifications on the car are as follows, exhaust, pod filter, manual boost controller, blow off valve, fuel pump, and possibly turbo, all done by previous owner. Not sure about internals. I'm in the Brisbane area if anyone can recommend someone to install and tune, and any other advice, it would be appreciated. Thanks, Anthony.

The two plug in solutions would be a power fc, or a link g4 plug n play unit. The link has the ability to run map based, and is a more flexible unit should you want to do more involved mods further down the track.

If your referring to MAP vs AFM since he has a 98 then the Power FC will be map based too. You can use the MAP Power FC on gen 2 engines as well you just need an adapter and MAP sensor.

Power FC is a great unit at a good price but like MCT says more modern ECU's give you more options ie, the ability to run flex fuel if you want to go down the E85 route one day, or run a failsafe map for meth injection which the Power FC can't do.

I'd also check with your tuner to see what they prefer as you might get better results using an ECU they are familiar with.

Thanks for the feedback, I also hear the HALTECH is a good option.

Haltech is a good option, however there will be the added expense of having it wired in. The closest to a plug in solution from haltech would be the Platinum sport 1000 and the ST185 celica patch loom. Being an ST185 loom, it is closer to the earlier SW20, so some repinning would be required to make it a viable option. If it can be, you would have to consult someone more familiar with the gen2/3 stuff than myself.

Its also $1895. Making it the most expensive option. Also requires mounting the ecu, for proper operation would will also need to put in the air temp sensor.

The link is to suit your model. You pull apart the stock ecu, change the board with the link one, make somewhere for the tuning cable to come out of the case, put it back together and off you go. Can have a knock link added for knock control functionality.

Then power fc's will be the cheapest option, and for pricing your best off speaking to gorilla industries, or see when one pops up on the forum.

But as Steve A has rightly pointed out, sometimes the best option is something your preferred tuner is most familiar with. Most tuners aremore than capable with power fcs, then some will like links over haltechs and vice versa. Also workout your budget, as that will dictate a lot, as the price difference between a power fc and a link/haltech will be most likely $1000, and then more again in the tuning (as there is less setup and adjustments to make in a powerfc)

I am running a ViPEC that is plug and "play". They do a gen 2 not sure on 3. They are based on Celica anyway. As said above the tuner is the key and also if your going to run flex fuel etc. Chapmans auto at Cooroy is relatively close for you also. Rob does a reasonable job an is versed across a few different ecu brands including ViPEC.

Vipec and link share identical hardware for their pnp applications, so yes a vipec is another option to the link i mentioned before.

You might be interested in this Haltech Platinum 1000 along with a plug and play adaptor.

I tuned this to suit my Gen3  3SGTE Turbo and it ran perfectly in my AW11.   I am currently running a GM Delco ecu so would consider selling this haltech package for $1400.
If your engine is close to standard, running the factory injectors this Haltech would probably run your engine fine with minimal tuning.
