NA SW20 - Pops Out of 5th Gear

Posting this on behalf of a friend who has a Gen1 NA SW20. When driving uphill under load, 5th gear pops out. If he modulates the throttle a bit it can be controlled to an extent. Anyone come across this before or know what the issue is?

Cables, bushings, transmission fluid or just buggered??

As you say its probably rooted.  There is a ball bearing at the tail end of the input shaft that takes out the axial thrust and they are often in rather bad shape.  There are a couple of circlips that can allow excess axial clearance.   The collar to gear engagement teeth are probably worn too. He could check the detent spring for fifth gear but that is not what keeps it engaged when under load.

I have, first time in a 2. Rented one and drove to the blue mountains from Sydney. 4th gear all down the highway certainly gave me an impression of engine noise! (and some puzzled looks from other drivers)
