New Turbocharged Toyota Engine Announced
Toyota announced a small displacement turbocharged engine today that will enter the market powering the compact Auris hatchback. It will be available as an option on that car, which is soon to be sold in North America under the Scion brand as the iM. Toyota didn’t say whether the new engine will be available in the Scion badged version of the car, but it isn’t likely to arrive soon because of that brand’s single trim, single price sales philosophy. Toyota said the direct injected engine will offer “world-leading thermal efficiency” by using a single scroll turbocharger and an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold to offer adaptive intake cooling regardless of the engine’s current thermal load. That all boils down to a small engine that makes 114 hp and 136 lb-ft of torque.

Sounds very much like Toyota's answer to the Ford Ecoboost range, most of which use the water cooled integrated manifold as well.

They need it, esp with Honda going turbo engines too now.

Anyone else miss those? I assume it should read "integrated water-cooled intercooler" And by the power output, I would say this is 1L sized motor, which doesn't make it a competitor to the Ecoboost or Honda Turbo motor. EDIT: Correction by MAJ before, I'm out of touch with my ECO Boost motors by the looks of it :P

But it'll be the first of a range I would assume.

There's going to be a plethora of small displacement turbocharged engines into the future.
I'm excited about the future direction with this sort of thing, hybrids and electric. Can't wait until the day a full electric is a good alternative for a daily.

I totally agree. I've been wanting to see one of the car manufacturers make a turbo diesel hybrid. We see phenomenal fuel economy from the VW turbo diesel range of cars, why not compliment that with KERS style system that can also provide 100% electric modes (for low speed driving or stop/start driving).

Ford make a 3cyl 1L Ecoboost (Ecoboost I-3). It's only won international engine of the year a few years running. I drove a Ford C-Max in Germany with this engine, was a great engine for it's size but totally in the wrong chassis with the C-Max. I so badly wanted missus to buy a Fiesta S with the same engine but she didn't like the car and picked a Honda instead. Honda's NA 1.3L is very cool too but not quite on this level (100PS vs 114HP and not nearly as much torque). It has exactly as mentioned in regards to the water cooled exhaust manifold. I.e. There is NO head -> exhaust -> turbo, it's direct head -> turbo mounting. They simply cast what would usually be the exhaust manifold directly onto the head, and the turbo bolts on. This gives the advantage of also routing coolant directly around the exhaust ducts, so the charge is cooler heading to the turbine (less heat transfer to intake charge), and alternatively the turbo (which is also plumbed directly) attributes to helping warm the engine quicker from cold, so there's less engine/turbo wear and quicker time to full boost. Ford also add an extra durable timing belt that's sealed within the crankcase and gets coated in oil, apparently helps reduce friction around the valvetrain. And again they use a separate water to air intercooler as pictured on Toyota engine. Ford's is also direct injected. As my first statement, Toyota is simply hopping on the bandwagon. I just hope their torque and fuel efficiency figures combined with their chassis design equal a better car, they certainly have their work cut out though.

It's a 1.2 litre engine, I believe. I'm more interested in the new 4 cylinder, 2 litre turbo in a couple of Lexus models (177Kw and 380Nm torque). cheers Steve
