VERBO's 1992 SW20 GT

Thought I would get the ball rolling after my invite to the forums from Zmit.
I've owned my imported 1992 MR2 GT (T-Bar) since late 2004.
It's in the bright yellow colour that never sold well during its production years, but I think that adds a bit to its character now, as I still have people come up to me at the servo for a looksie.

I'll put up some pictures later, but for now, heres whats been done so far.

- Full Genuine VeilSide Body Kit
- ANZ Velvet 18x8.5 Wheels (Hankook Rubber)
- Custom Inter-cooler in Factory Location
- Custom Blow-off-Valve
- K&N High Flow "POD-Style" Air Filter
- Stainless Steel Ducting from Turbo to Throttle Body
- Twin Custom Stainless Steel 3" Exhausts
- HKS Automatic Turbo Timer (Type-1)
- Splitfire Mechanical Boost Gauge on A-Pillar
- 14PSI Boost (Used to run 16 but I felt it was a little too high)
- Isotta Evoluzione Steering Wheel, Pedals and Gear Shift
- Short Throw Shifter
- Camber Adjustment Kit
- Super Pro Polyurethane Suspension Bushes
- Rebuilt Steering Rack

Things I have, but have not been bothered to install:
- HKS Ultra-Light Chromolly Flywheel
- HKS Electronic Boost Controller

And who works on it?
Mechanical: Brian Turner Automotive
Suspension: Pedder's Suspension
Body: Al's Panel Shop

mines not quite that bad yet. but i have lost my little silver plastic bits on occasion.
i've seen you at uni a few times last year and 2007 as well. although back then i didnt realise it was turbo, nor did i know how to check.

so what provoked the custom BOV and intercooler?

    Hi there,

Bringing this thread back to life, as Verbo is not dead or forgotten.

I purchased her in February 2013, looking like this:

With a bunch of little issues that needed to be sorted mainly:

Gauges where not working - no speedo, no tacho, nothing
Coilover's camber adjustment plates, 2 of 4 put in backward (Installed by DNT Performance...)
    Lower ball joints stuffed
Rear spoiler and bar damaged, spoiler missing air blade
Front spoiler badly cracked on the left, looks like it has had many repairs over the years - at least 3 different colours of fibreglass and/or bog
Small ding in lower section of left door
Stereo not working properly, front speakers shorting in and out - also tweeters disconnected and replaced with co-axial's.
    Boost gauge light not working
General wear and tear on interior
Heaps and heaps of grime everywhere

When I saw the car for sale I was immediately interested. I could see buying this car could potentialy be a big money pit, but as I was already invested in an sv21 Camry 3sge-t project, I thought at worst case this car will have many re-useable parts for the Camry if it turns out to be a lemon.

Turn's out the main issue where the lemon heads that had worked on this car for the last few years. When I pulled the dash apart to look at the gauges I found this: (I can't attach pic atm due to new account status, will when I can.

Scotch guard clips or whatever they are called, harness adaptor plugged into a harness adator, speaker wire used as power wire and other nasty's. Replaced all this quick smart. Tacho issue was swollen caps luckily. Turbo timer was just unplugged as was the boost gauge light lol

After this all was working bar the speedo - have been using the electronic read out for now, trying to sort out a TRD item but funds have been tight this last year or so (been saving for a house) been lving with the digital output on the turbo timer for now. Got the suspension sorted by pedders and got her regoed about a fortnight after purchase.

On the maiden voyage, it was love at first drive. Took her to the drags and after a few runs, managed a 14.142 at 106mph - 60 foot time of 1.72 seconds. I was very impressed, quick and can turn. Since then I have acquired a few bits and pieces, and sorted out other little issues as they arise such as front wheel bearings, new tie rod and power steering ends, new sun visors, new splits, fixed up dogey wiring in various places too, fitted a Boost Cut Defender and turned the boost up to 14 psi from 11psi, got rid of the dodgey AFM Pod adaptor and fitted a proper Apexi intake.

I'm sure there is more im missing, but probably minor. Plans for the future is to update the look from the "Fast & Furious" Veilside kit to either a Border body kit, or a TRD wide body kit at the front and something different at the back. Not sure as off yet, but there will be a bunch of carbon fibre items added to the build, which ever route I go.

Will add some photos when my account status allows me too

    Kind regards,

    Ryan

    My how she has fallen...
I had to offload it years ago due to buying a new Subaru and having no where to store it.

Before I did had had new adjustable suspension,  new polyurethane bushes and a rebuilt steering rack put in by Dean at Pedders. Its inevitable the the front lip scraped up kerbs from time to time but I would on occasion take it to Als panel to be fixed up, Greg always did top notch work and it always came back looking like new.

I really cant say much about the audio and guages. All was well while I owned it and nothing like you have described, audio was in ofc figure eight copper and power was in ofc xlpe, and I dont recall ever seeing scotchlocks under the dash for guages or the turbo timer. It wouldnt supprise me though if people have cut some corners over the years as I know of it having at least 3 owners since.

Such a shame...but im glad its finally found a good home. If you ever want a hks ultralight flywheel or hks electronic boost controller that will suit it let me know as I think I may still have them.

    Hi Verbo,

    Thanks for the response, appreciated.

From what I can see from this thread and your for sale thread, and the photos you had up before they where taken down, that the car was very clean at the time of sale. I wasn't having a go at you for the car you put together or the people you had work on it, rather the people that worked on it from Jan 2011 and after.

All in all really happy with the car :-)

It still has adjustable suspension, the unconfirmed story I have is the previous owner crashed the car and damaged the old coil overs, so he had the car fitted with new K-Sport coilovers and adjustable camber plates that are now a year and a half old. Apparently really cheap units, they have given a decent ride quality and great handling. Always take the car to Pedders for a pro assessment and wheel alignment. I fit the parts and they check and align everything. Pretty sure it still has poly mounts through out.

The front bar looks like it has a few home jobs done on it - color don't quite match, and the fiberglass has sagged where it meets the bonnet - its not too bad at a glance but you can see its there if you look for it - which again makes me think home job. The rest of the kit is pretty minty, only thing I can see that could have been improved where the side skirts in the door jam, the door touches lightly and has scraped some paint off over time - but for the amount of paint gone in 5 years its pretty good fitment. Will probably go back to Al for paint as he knows the car. It still turns heads where ever it go's.

Audio issues where deff after your time, speakers looked only two years old - speakers wire was run outside the door loom, getting crushed in the door jam. Tweeters must of started shorting, so just cut them out. Idiots. Also had an alarm system fitted with scotch locks and speaker cable. The amp side is unmolested, with very neat wiring - was working a charm until about a month ago, when it gave up the ghost. Have another to fit, just haven't got to it yet.

It has found a good home, and its here to stay for the next few years at least. I have a hard time of letting go of cars. Will try and bring her back to former glory and inject some of my personal taste and style into it.

Very interested in the hks flywhell and bcc - let me know if you dig em out.

Pretty much all that is left to fix is the aging paint and bodywork, and source a TRD speedometer. Oh and new seats and wheel, as the leather is starting to go.

I will probably start my own thread from here as I don't want to hijack this one, just thought I would touch base with the previous owner and let him know his baby is in good hands :-)

    Kind regards,

    Ryan
