A Potential Sustainable SC12 / SC14 Supercharger Replacement.

*** Foreword: This thread is not about doing dodgy turbo installs with $50 T25 turbos, china spec cast manifolds for less then a replacement supercharger option. ***

I have recently been collecting various superchargers for a few projects (4AGZE & 1MZ-FZE) and recently I found a setup that might be a viable replacement for the old agricultural air pumps we call the SC12 & SC14 Supercharger.

With the arrival of my latest supercharger, an Eaton M90 from a Ford Thunderbird, it highlighted how compact the core of the M90 is, and most importantly, how close it is to the size of an SC12/SC14.

Out of the box, the TB M90 drive snout is too long, however their are shorter versions available, one example is a machined down snout from Jon Bond Performance.

However, there is a perfect M90 unit found on a model of Jaguar, which is a little less common and a bit more expensive then the more common M90's, it would be a lot simpler to bolt on.

The TB M90 itself can be picked up second hand for relatively good prices (I bought mine for $250) and they flood ebay.com (not .com.au) at reasonable prices even after importing. There are plenty of old-new stock and refurb units out there as well.

The TB M90 has three good mounting points (the Jag unit has 4) that will allow it to be mounted either direction to the side of a 4AGZE block with the use of a simple mount between supercharger and block. I have yet to test fit it against a spare engine to see which way the supercharger is best to mount (outlet firewall side or block side) however there is ample room for either.

The big reason I have decided to create this thread is because unlike the SC12 & SC14 superchargers, the Eaton range of superchargers are completely rebuild-able. You can buy full bearing kits, full drive rebuild kits, completely new rotors and even cases. You no longer have to play the game of roulette with buying 20+ year old SC12 or SC14's where someone else has already had the best out of them (or spun them beyond their limits and wants to off load it before it fails).

Good of you to share. How much of a power gain could it potentially yield?

I've plugged the details into a supercharger calculator I have that is based on some rough calculations in excel. It advises that with an AFR of 11.5:1 (safe rich), running 1 bar of boost, the M90 will flow 265HP worth of air. This is for a 1.6L displacement motor with a rev limit of 7700rpm. This is with the M90 geared 1:1 (not ideal), if you increase the over drive ratio, the boost goes up pretty quick ie: going for 1:1.1 produces 18psi and 295HP worth of air. This pushes the M90 outside of it's efficiency range, but probably not as bad as an SC14 at stock ratios :P

Although, there is the option of using a secondary throttle body as a variable re-stricter to prevent over boosting and allow the M90 to run at a higher RPM closer to it's maximum. This would give it some seriously aggressive response while getting the most out of the supercharger.

It's a big guess without doing a build, but I would say it will be an upgrade from the SC12 and SC14 in all forms.

Having a bit of a tinker with this project again, but with my M62 supercharger. I have a couple of ideas I want to try out to make it a suitable replacement for an SC12.

Removed the snout from my M62 (From a Pontiac).

Custom pullies can easily be fitted to these superchargers, there are plenty of kits available on ebay.

The factory pulley requires a bit of work to remove, however I've seen the quick swap pulley kits which makes this a 5 minute job with an allen key.

The plan is to machine the extended part of the stout down to the front cover, then machine up a new bearing block and weld it onto the front cover. This should provide the shortest snout option possible and reducing the length by 50-75mm.

Will throw in some more updates when I get around to tinkering further, but I'll leave you with this...
