EH Power Steering Fluid

Is this fluid really necessary? I saw somewhere where it was $48US. Is there an alternative and could the wrong fluid make a power steering unit nosier? If there is an alternative what is it and if not where do you get the EH fluid from?

    The Toyota fluid is just Auto transmission fluid. Dexron 3 I think
