Servicing and Maintaining a Rarely Driven MR2

This is a topic I've been thinking about lately, especially since my long term trusted mechanic recently closed down, as well as wanting to do more on my car myself. My MR2 is rarely driven, maybe 2-3 times a month if I'm lucky, and I know there are a number of others in a similar situation.

I'd like to put together a guide of sorts, as to what would be a good service and maintenance schedule for a rarely driven car, covering all the fluids and consumable parts that would normally be replaced on a "change every XXXX kms basis".

As an outline:

====================================================

Engine Oil (good semi/full synthetic): 6-12 months depending on usage
Engine Oil Filter: as above

Spark Plugs (copper/platinum/iridium): x/x/x months - inspect on oil change, change as required

Air Filter: clean and inspect on oil change, replace/re-oil as necessary

Fuel Filter: 12 months

Transmission Oil: 24 months

Engine Coolant (Toyota Red): 24 months
Thermostat: as above

Brake Fluid: 12 months
Brake Pads/Discs: as required

Clutch Fluid: 12 months

Power Steering Fluid (where applicable): Years....

Battery: Regular maintenance charging recommended

Major service components
Accessory belts (alternator, A/C): inspect regularly
Timing belt: inspect regularly, change x kms/months
Water pump: change with timing belt or as required

Sub-note:
Rarely driven cars should generally be looked over monthly or before a long drive, checking all oil and fluid levels, condition of belts, spark plug condition etc.
It's always good to run the A/C (if fitted) for a while on each drive to save the seals drying out and keep the system working as normal.
Also remember to check your tyre pressures and the tightness of your wheel nuts (particularly aftermarket ones) regularly, especially before and after a long drive.

====================================================

I know there are a few knowledgeable people on here including mechanics, engineers etc, so feel free to chime in and I'll update the first post (please also mention anything else you feel should be added to the list), hopefully we can get a good general guide and perhaps make this a sticky for reference.

I guess one maintanence item is the battery. Although most people who rarely drive already have one, it might be worth mentioning the benefits of CTek, Battery fighter etc battery conditioners?

I used to go through car batteries every 6-12 months before I bought a battery fighter and permanently connected it. Then just simply left the car plugged into a 240v outlet when not in use.

Good call, probably forgot that one as I have a maintenance charger on mine hehe.
    Thanks Nick!

Really good topic. The same thoughts have crossed my mind too. At the moment, I've been doing or considering the following. Feel free to highlight what I'm doing wrong. I know some people are extremely anal about some aspects & will recommend I do a lot more, more frequently, but I feel the below has been (or will be) adequate.

Oil & oil filter change - 6months to yearly (this is considering I'm not even close to 5000km a year & oil quality is quite good these days)
Fuel filter - same time as the oil change (mainly due to increased frequency of old fuel in the tank)
Battery - as mentioned, I have a trusty CTEK too (handy birthday present)
Spark Plugs (copper/platinum/iridium) - depends on the plugs (+ general usage conditions), I use copper & have an MSD but in all fairness, my plugs have lasted 2yrs so far. I do check plugs when doing oil change etc.
Air Filter - I clean this when changing oil/filter etc
Transmission Oil - I don't change this by mileage, but I'm anticipating it'll be done every 2 years (maybe even a bit more) considering it'll do less than 10,000km in 2years.
Engine Coolant (Toyota Red) - I use Nulon red which is meant to last over 100,000km. Given I recently changed all my hoses & serviced my radiator, I don't anticipate changing coolant for a fairly long time.
Thermostat - Probably not for many years unless it causes problems (I changed mine during the rebuilt)
Brake Fluid - Depends on fluid, but maybe every 2-3 years.
Brake Pads/Discs - As required (brakes last a ridiculous amount of time considering I don't use them often)
Clutch Fluid - Depends on fluid (like brakes), so maybe every 2-3 years.
Power Steering Fluid (where applicable) - Probably as often as coolant

    Major service components:
    Accessory belts (alternator, A/C) - On inspection/demand
Timing belt - Probably every 10 years @ the rate I'm going, funny cos most built engines die before the timing belt is due, which is usually the point in which I replace
Water pump - On demand, but changed when I did an engine rebuild

On a final note, I should highlight how I treat my car in light of its low usage. Driven like Paul's, 2-3 times per month. Less than 5000km a year. Street driven, a bit of fun boost here & there, but no prolonged hammering (it's somewhat retired from abuse - already done its bid for king & country).

Parking/storage - indoors away from the elements (sunlight, water or any salty air), stable room temperatures.
Cold starts - Wait a few seconds for oil pressure to build/flow, then warm the car up under light load (no boost). Once coolant temperature has stabilised in the 80's for a few minutes, then I wake up the turbo. I feel it's important NOT to do quick start & shutdowns on the car without taking it for a nice drive (to avoid fouling the plugs etc)
Fuel - I seldom fill the tank. I typically go halfway so I can use fresh fuel as often as possible. Only exception is when planning for a longer drive of course.
Driving frequency - I generally do not to let it sit/sleep for over a fortnight, so the seals etc etc don't cake.
Washing/vacuum - I wash it 1-2 times a month given it's rarely dirty (only a bit dusty sometimes). But as part of this MR2 ritual, I always check fluids (oil, coolant, P/S, clutch & brake). Along with a quick inspection for any leaks or loose ends.

I need to get one of these CTEK's. My battery constantly needs charging even though its new.

CTEK's (or similar) are a worthwhile investment track_mr2, can be bought for about $100 or so online, Repco also have them and are usually even cheaper when on sale.

Have updated the first post including some of MR2QIK's feedback and other info.

Can anyone confirm how often Toyota recommend their red coolant be changed?
Also for those with power steering (EHPS), from memory there was also a recommended lifespan of the genuine fluid?

    * Engine oil changes 12 months
    * Transmission fluid 2 years or more
    * Brake fluid, clutch 1 year (this is the difference for cars that sit)
    * Fuel filter 12 months (or earlier with oil change)
    * Coolant 24 months
    * EHPS fluid could go 10 years and still be fine tbh

    The rest is self explanatory.

I think mine is the "CTEK MXS 5.0".

The '5.0' means 5 amp max charging current. I suppose you could go for a higher current, but if you will be using the charger primarily to keep the battery healthy when the car isn't driven often, then a higher current won't make much difference.

I don't have a power point in my garage where I live now so I can't use my charger anymore unfortunately.
However, in my old garage I used the charger regularly and it was fantastic.

There is an extensive build thread for my car here: http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=18316
