well, mechanic has reported back today to let me know the engine is stuffed. He said it has no compression in cylinders 1 and 2. most likely piston damage etc.

Apparently there is no longer a machine shop in Dubbo so I told them to just leave it and i'll pay him for what ever investigation work he has completed and take the car home to work on it myself. guess i'll just take my time and put some goodies in there to make sure its a touch stronger this time round.

I have looked at some engines to just do a straight swap but im a little nervous about going a used engine now as I don't want to risk buying a lemon... again haha.

Theres a caldina GTT engine on ebay which is apparently only 25,000kms old, but it looks like crap so think i'll steer clear and just do it the hard way.

So, I can find a Gen 3 3SGTE with Loom and Ecu on Ebay,

Engine has 110,000kms on it, the guy cant tell me if it had good compression or not when they removed it and sent it to Australia etc. so it is an unknown. The price is $2800 + freight.

Does anyone think its worth the shot or just bite the bullet and rebuild my engine with H Beams, forgies and a balance?.

Appreciate your thoughts.

If you can afford a decent rebuild then imho that is always best.

I just went through the same thing and decided to rebuild my gen2. I got ct20b and all the parts i needed off dylan for a really good price. If you can at least drop the motor and put it back in yourself its a better result than an unknown condition gen3. My rebuild owes me about $2500 but i did everything except machining and balancing

I was contemplating doing the rebuild myself, only downside being my lack of time as I get very little time at home. But I guess I'll go the built bottom end route if this is best. When I get home in November I'll strip her and have a look at what the insides are like.

Got home yesterday, began working on the MR2 until the storms ripped in. so had to leave her there, hadn't managed to get much done as it took me a few hours just to get the bloody Frunk open!.

drained the oil this afternoon once the rain had stopped, then removed the covers and the sump, sure enough cylinder 2 has a big end loose as a goose!. so its a big end for sure. stuck the inspection cam down each cylinder and all pistons appear to be in good order as do the bores.

now I need to decide how to move forward.

thinking a quick hone, throw a set of standard size forged pistons in and a set of H beam rods, try to track down a new crank so it saves me worrying about getting this one machined and fitting oversized bearings etc.

cant wait to get her done and driving again.

Ok. End result is a lovely combination of a stuffed valve, needs rings and a big end bearing absolutely stuffed. Have looked at all my options and building a tough bottom end is going to take time and a big chunk of money so I have purchased a gen 2 engine package which is supposedly In good condition, I will get a mechanic to throw that in for me as I have to go back to work so am away again for a while. Then I'll get my old bottom end and rip her apart and start to tinker. Have priced up a stroker crank from ppm to give it a 91mm stroke but with the finish it priced up at $2600 alone!.(the complete forged stroker bottom end in my 347 Windsor was only 3100 and that cam with rods, pistons and rings!) So maybe that's one for the wish list. I'll just see how I'm going as I get it cleaned up. First things first I need to get her going so I can keep driving it.

Have decided to sell my 65 coupe and just focus on my 2 for now so I'll probably put her up for sale soon.

Stroker crank for $2600??? Get one from a Camry for $50-$100 and have the journals turned down to suit 3sgte rods.
