Help please

Why would the engine in my SW 20 just stop? I had driven 800 km today & nearly home (2 Km to go) & the engine just stopped. I have checked all the usual things, plenty of fuel, spark plugs & distributor wires all okay. I have tried to start the engine but all it does is turn the motor over without any fire from the spark plugs. Any help or knowledge of what may be the problem would be gratefully appreciated.

Wow, after all the k's you've done over the last week, were lucky it only happened not far from home.
I can only offer you the pages from the service manual. Carefully note the order they suggest you check things.
    Fuel is first.

For a simple fuel test, maybe slightly loosen the top fuel filter banjo bolt, and crank the starter just for a moment.
If the fuel pump is working ok and the fuel filter is not clogged, fuel should leak out because it should be under about 40 psi.
For access, remove the top intake resonator. Then  you'll need a 17mm ring spanner for the top bolt and a 19mm open-ender under the banjo to hold the filter.
These bolts are generally very tight, so position the spanners so you can squeeze them together to loosen, and the same to tighten again.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Ian. I was so lucky to drive all over Tasmania & all the way back to home in NSW 3500 Km then to have it stop just 2 Km short of home. I have tried to start it again today with no luck. I put it on a trailer to get it home the last 2 Km. Have been busy catching up with work, so will attack the engine on Thursday, I will do what you say with the fuel filter banjo bolt. That could be the problem as the spark is okay.
Thank you for the pages from the service manual it's very helpful. I will let you know how I get on. PM on its way as well.

Timing belt snapped? When you turn the key does the engine turn over fast?

Yes, a broken belt may be a possibility, and obviously the first thing to check before worrying about anything else.
Anyway, luckily your motor is non-interference.
How long since the belt was changed?

A simple way to check for a broken belt  is to use a 10mm ratchet socket to undo the top timing cover bolt, just enough to use a screwdriver to pry the edge of the cover away slightly.
You should just be able to see the top of the exhaust cam gear turning when the motor is cranked.
If it doesn't turn then the belt has gone.

Alternatively, remove the spark plugs and use a vacuum tester to check compression on cranking.
No pressure on most cylinders means a broken belt.

Nothing like an MR2 Club Event to sort out all your problems ......  wheels etc.  ;-)

Sounds like a timing belt, if you were driving and the engine just stopped.

Glad you got home "eventually" and hope it all works out OK.

You were all right, it was the timing belt, thank you all for the correct cause of the problem. The engine did turn over quickly when the starter was engaged. I have removed the broken belt.
We were so lucky to do over 3,500 Km down to Melbourne, around Tasmania & back from Melbourne, to have it break just 2 Km from home.
Have ordered a new timing belt & will be trying my hand at fitting it with the engine in the car. I have done my Celica ST 162 with 3S-GE engine a couple of times without removing the engine. It has about as much space to work in as the SW-20 MR2.
    Thank you all again.

Ray you may like to check out:
    http://www.mrtwo.net/mr2m...ingbelt/timingbelt.htm

Although it's for a turbo it may help, depending on which type of timing belt tensioner you have .
Maybe also a good idea to fit a new water pump, belt rollers, seals, etc while you're at it.

I will check the fuel pump tomorrow Jason. I am going to do the full water pump as well as the timing belt. The old water pump was starting to go so it is the time to replace it.
