17" or 18"?

I am at a crossroad of what I want for new shoes.
I am in need of them for roadworthiness and my car originally came with 15" so 17's would be the sensible (and legal) choice, however, 18" look better.
I'm also looking at squeezing (17/18) x 7.5 +38 fronts and (17/18) x 9.5 +12 rear.  Does anyone know if this will protrude from the guards?
Any suggestions of tyres to match the new shoes?  I'm thinking maybe 205/(40/35) front and 255/(40/35) rear.

Rims in question are SSR SP1's

The fronts should be ok but good lord dude 9.5" +12 rear is going to stick out a mile. I've got 17x9 rear +35 and they rub on the guards enough...
18s are heavier than 17s and 35 profile is too slim IMO (which you'd probably need for 18s), one nice pothole and your rim is toast.
    Tyres: Federal 595 RS-R.

The rules are no longer such that a 2" increase in wheel size is ok. Now it's done by rolling diameter, +/- 15mm from stock, so this now takes your tyre profile into account. The easiest way to calculate most of what you're asking is with this http://mr2.gordaen.com/wt_calc.php

9.5" +12 rears are never going to fit without serious flaring of the gaurds. They will protrude past stock gaurds by 30mm!

As for legal 18" wheels well you'd have to fit the fronts with 235/30 rubber to be legal. I don't know if you can get rubber in that size. Not to mention the ride would be terrible.

In my opinion anything lower than 45 profile rubber is a bad compromise for the road. My profile pic is of 17x7.5"+32 with 215/40 rubber. The car was more fun to drive on the 16" rubber I had fitted prior.

Fronts will be good rears will be tight. Will need a fair amount of camber.

I think MR2QIK is running 18x9.5 +29 and his is damn close!
    See here: http://www.mr2australia.c...=15091&whichpage=1

Im running (double stagger of) 17x 8 +29 (215/40) on the front and 18x9 +30 (245/40) on rear and fits great, with guards rolled it rarely ever scrapes guards (Tien SS on lowest setting)

Just re-read what you wrote: Why not just do what everyone else seem to do for roadworthy and just borrow a set of stock MR2 wheels? (better then forking out for wheels that might not be suitable.)

    Hey dylan,
What are the tyres that come with those rims? What size are they?

18x9.5 +12 will fit the rear with enough camber. Probably too much in my opinion though.

MR2QIK - what size tyres have you got on yours?  If i remember correctly when i saw your car at Al Palmers the tyres were slightly stretched.  Is this right or am i just seeing things again?

I'm running 225-40-18 simply because I had them & wanted to kill them (not due to clearance issues). 255-35-18 will fit & are next in line. 265 will prolly work too, but I want a smidgen of stretch look.

I had 215s stretched onto 9" rears for about a week and its not recommended. Tyre could come off the bead.

Good lord dude hope you don't corner hard...how did they get it to inflate with that much stretch?
I've got Federal 595 RS-Rs in 235/40/17 on there now and they're PERFECTLY flush with the rim, although the Feds do run wider than normal.

Was that a 215/35? I've been running mine for a while without a single issue. If you saw it in real life, it's well & truly on there.

    No a 215/40/17...
Recommended MAX rim size is 8.5 inches for a 215. Some tyre places refuse to do such things, I had to talk my tyre guy into doing it since it was only going to be on there for a week. I like to corner hard and I couldn't risk it.
With Jap rims apparently its easier to inflate a stretched tyre, than non-Jap.

I'm desperate to change it believe me.  They came with the car.  I'd rather roll on something that actually fits the car
