Isn't running 98ron supposed to "help clean the engine" as advertised on the signs next to each pump?

Guys I don't use octane booster.

whats the go with the bores?

have you owned the car since new?

then you don't know if it's ever had octane booster then.....

could also be from other fuel additives.

whats your issue with the bores?

Ive had it for nine years, is it possible that all that is from PO? The photo doesn't show it well but the bores are super shiny.

the valves don't look like theyre overheated (other colour would normally be related to this) and since the plugs etc are the same tinge i would be thinking it's fuel related, though im sure this heads seen some heat,

the bores do look washed as your getting at but it is a old engine that has been running rich so what your saying is somewhat true about the bov, however generally running rich is alot worse then a back off fuel surge with the bov imo.

whats the plans for this engine? is it the one being built or just a spare now?

Nah spare, only using Alt bracket and sump etc off this one. dunno where this one will end up.

Forgot about the whole 'AFM/atmo bov' bog with the gen2s. doh!

a possible contributor, though I wouldn't point to it as THE sole reason

as Kameleon posted

Also consider oil quality and service intervals (unknown PO habits?) may have played a part here too.

9+ years is a good life for a turbo motor,
with the extra pressure(versus NA) behind the rings(pushing them outwards)
you could reasonably expect
to have visibly more bore wear over that length of time anyway.

Hey Kris, I LOVE your IC setup! I have wanted to fit a W2A IC for months, but until seeing your setup I haven't been able to decide how to go about it. Did you get the whole kit (PWR-5217) including the 4" by 8" barrel, heat exchanger, fan, pump and filler? If so, does that mean you were able to fit the 9" heat exchanger in the same place as the stock side-mount IC?

Cheers, Yes, yes and yes. This will be changing though. I'll be using a side feed manifold so the core will be moving about a foot to the pass side, to retain a short path.

There is debate over weather locating the HE in the stock IC location is benaficial or not. I've never had dramas with it but this was a low power setup. I will be running a larger front mount HE in the future.

I also had my exhaust mani HPC coated to ensure minimal heat soak, although I think I'll use the stock heatshield aswell when I find someone who wants to sell one.

Thanks for the quick response! My front bumper is being changed shortly, so that will be a good time for me to decide if I want to do a front mount heat exchanger (even if it's still the 9" one in the kit). At least you have confirmed for me that the 9" heat exchanger and fan will fit in the side mount location, if I decide to do it that way
Now I have to make a final decision on a new turbo!
